Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster’s caped creation leapt from the comics pages in 1938 and went on to thrill audiences in all manner of media, including motion pictures.

Ever since Kirk Alyn played the title role in Columbia Pictures’ 1948 Superman serial, several actors–George Reeves, Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and Henry Cavill–have donned the familiar blue-and-red uniform for the big screen. This week, David Corenswet joins the roster of big-screen Men of Steel with the opening of director James Gunn’s Superman.
