Wake Up! Here Are Some 2011 Summer Movie Sleepers

Fourteen-year-olds (of all ages) are juiced for the summer of 2011, because not only do we have the much-anticipated Marvel Comics blockbuster Captain America on tap, we're also primed for some intergalactic action with DC Comics' emerald avenger Green Lantern, more hardy (ar-harr) hijinks with Johnny Depp and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and a lot of monkeying around with the Rise of the Planet of the Apes. In the midst of this cinematic cacophony, the movie addict overstuffed with effects-heavy efforts might reasonably ask: Is that all there is?

Movie Irv is back just in time to clue you in on a few summer "sleepers" he believes will act as effective counterprogramming as we enter a season sweltering with superheroes, sequels, and reboots:

    Quentin Tarantino was spotted at a multi-plex during a showing of the most recent STAR TREK. He said that now and then, you just want to be entertained (or words to that effect). Anyway, that's precisely what the Summer movie scene is all about. Movies that win oscars ARE what they ARE, but now and then, you just want to be entertained.

    Thanks so much! Those of us who are a little older prefer some movies that are not just eye candy. Blockbusters are fine (we all go see them once in a while). But the movies you remember the rest of your life have some substance, some "meat on the bones". I will check out some of these
    recommendations.
