"Them" (1954) and "The Thing" (1951)

The first War of the Worlds scared the nightmares into me when I saw it in the 1950's. I love it and see it at least once or twice a year. Boris Karloff as Frankenstein was and is the definition of monster portrayal. He is fascinating to watch, and this description fits after 81 years! I love a lot of classic scary movies, but these two are wonderful to see again and again.

When I was a kid, Val Lewton's "The Leopard Man" really scared me, especially the scene where the mother forces the young girl to walk the dark streets at night to buy milk for the baby. I was never able to walk alone at night to the corner grocery store after seeing this movie. I was sure that leopard was waiting in the shadows to kill me. In my adult years, "The Exorcist" terrified me and I was unable to sleep for the full week after viewing it. In fact, I had to move in with friends.

I really also have to mention " Friday 13th " starring Betsy Palmer...She is great and I have an autographed picture of her given to me by her with a message for me not to get grossed out by her wielding the bloody dagger . She is a really nice lady and I am old enough to remember her when she was a panalist on an old television quiz show.

Yes January, it seems no one read the instructions (alas). I have a hundred favorites (some mentioned above), but for my "classic" film I'd have to go with "Night of the Living Dead" which I saw when I was 15 at the drive-in in 1969 -- the scariest movie experience I've ever had. Picking a recent film should be easier because I watch many and truly enjoy so few. My first impulse was to name the 2006 movie "Slither," but I'm going instead to choose the film that started the tongue-in-cheek monster-movie revival it's descended from -- "Tremors" (1990). A lot of you younger folks won't agree that it's "recent," but I'm not younger, and it's one of the most enjoyable movies of any type I've ever seen.

Scary........ Having seen many of the old B/W ones as a kid, (very few in color), As an 11 yearold waiting outside the theater in the dark with wind signing in the trees waiting for dad to pick me up, an old barely "B" movie called Unkown island scared the socks off me. Only watching it again last year 6o years later did I realize it was a knockoff of The all time classic "King Kong"of 1933. Both versions of "The Thing" werwe great based on time and technology, with the Kurt Russel much closer to the original story. Both of War of the worlds are great too. And Psycho stands alone as nightmare generator. Oddly, one of the scariest modern films is The Matrix, once you peel away the action etc., and think about what has happened to humankind, your skin crawls for weeks. The old classic "Them", was very scary for it's time, but these days I watch it several times a year for memories sake. strange that many films have fears and dark thoughts in them that we don't see until many years later.
