Hong Kong Confidential
Fast-paced espionage thriller follows Casey Reed (Gene Barry), a secret agent posing as a nightclub singer, as he undertakes a dangerous mission to rescue the prince of the small Arab nation of Thamen from Soviet spies. Can Reed save the young royal and foil a communist plot to ruin an agreement that will allow a U.S. missile base to be built in Thamen? Beverly Tyler, Noel Drayton, Allison Hayes co-star.

Tomorrow Is Forever
Scarred and disabled in battle in World War I, American soldier Orson Welles goes into hiding in Austria while wife Claudette Colbert, assuming her husband is dead, remarries factory owner George Brent. Eventually, Welles is hired by Brent and returns to America to find his wife and the son he never knew. Moving melodrama also stars Richard Long and Natalie Wood (in her first credited screen role).

The colorful inhabitants of John Steinbeck's novel are brought to life in this seriocomic tale of friendship and romance in a central California fishing town. While Pilon (Spencer Tracy) plots to steal the life savings of his pal Pirate (Frank Morgan), Danny (John Garfield), who recently inherited a pair of houses from his late grandfather, tries to woo beautiful cannery worker "Sweets" (Hedy Lamarr). Natalie Portman and Ashton Kutcher star in this sizzling romantic comedy from director Ivan Reitman. She's an overworked doctor who doesn't believe in love. He's an aspiring scriptwriter on the rebound after being dumped. Their "friends with benefits" arrangement seems like a perfect scenario for both of them-until an unexpected emotional involvement threatens to ruin the whole affair. It's mobsters versus hippies in director Otto Preminger's psychedelic cult comedy. Ex-gangster Jackie Gleason, forced out of retirement and sent behind bars at Alcatraz to bump off stool pigeon Mickey Rooney, takes an accidental LSD trip and hatches a wild escape plan. While Gleason's away, wife Carol Channing allows daughter Alexandra Hay and her "flower power" pals to move into the family mansion. Amazing ensemble cast also includes Frankie Avalon, Frank Gorshin, John Phillip Law, Cesar Romero, and (as crime boss "God" in his final film role) Groucho Marx.

Like Glen Frey says, the heat is on! So here are some new DVD and Blu-ray releases that will help you cool down as we approach the dog days of summer. Check out the variety of titles that are now available!
Elvis: Four-Movie Collection, Vol. 1
For his first movie after serving in the Army, Elvis Presley sings the "G.I. Blues" (1960) and makes a bet with his soldier buddies that he can woo nightclub singer Juliet Prowse. Songs include "It's Not Good Enough for You," "Frankfurt Special," and the title tune. In "Girls! Girls! Girls!" (1962), the King plays a Hawaii tuna fisherman who lands a nightclub-singing gig to try and get his dad's boat out of hock. Songs include "Return to Sender," "The Nearness of You," and more. With Stella Stevens, Laurel Goodwin. After a big top accident leaves him afraid of heights, trapeze performer Presley heads for "Fun in Acapulco" (1963) as a lifeguard/singer. "Viva el Amor," "Bossanova," and "No Room to Rhumba in a Sports Car" are among the songs. Ursula Andress co-stars. After he's run off the road and his cycle is smashed, Elvis signs on as a worker with a carnival run by Barbara Stanwyck and eventually becomes the show's singing star (performing "Poison Ivy League," "Carnival Time," and more) in the song-filled "Roustabout" (1964). With Joan Freeman, Sue Ann Langdon; Raquel Welch's film debut!

You might say Barney Panofsky (Paul Giamatti) (movie review of Barney's Version) earned the right to be a cynical, hard-drinking S.O.B.-except that most of his problems seem to be mostly brought on by his own questionable choices, like ditching his second wife (Minnie Driver) on their wedding day to hit on the woman (Rosamund Pike) who will become his third bride. But there are yet more comic twists and difficult hardships to come in this quick-witted adaptation of the Mordecai Richler novel. With Rachelle Lefevre, Scott Speedman, and Dustin Hoffman.

James Garner is Raymond Chandler's heralded detective in this intriguing mystery. Philip Marlowe's search for a woman's missing brother in Los Angeles leads him into a murder plot complicated by tough police officials, strippers, and martial arts henchmen.
