Sure, to mark the release of the new Superman movie we could run a poll asking you to select your favorite Man of Steel. But, as the saying goes, a hero is only as good as the villains he faces. And no enemy has given Supes more trouble over the last 80-plus years than criminal genius Lex Luthor.
With or without hair, Luthor has been portrayed by a variety of actors since making his live-action film debut in the 1950 serial Atom Man vs. Superman. From an evil mastermind looking to sink California into the Pacific (1978’s Superman) to a teenage friend of young Clark Kent (TV’s Smallville), Lex has evolved over time to serve as the envious dark counterpoint to his caped adversary’s embodiment of hope.
