It was 40 years ago this week that New York magazine writer David Blum’s article tagged a group of popular twentysomething actors and actresses with the nickname “Hollywood’s Brat Pack.” The group–whose membership has always been rather liquid–were featured in such ’80s crowd pleasers as The Outsiders, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, St. Elmo’s Fire, and other films, and their exploits on and off the set filled gossip magazines and tabloids. Many of the “Brat Packers” went on to successful movie and TV careers, as evidenced earlier this year by Demi Moore’s Academy Award nomination for The Substance.
