Natalie Wood and Steve McQueen Find “Love With the Proper Stranger”

1963’s acclaimed romantic dramedy Love with the Proper Stranger stars Natalie Wood as Angie Rossini, a “good Italian girl” who becomes pregnant after a one-night stand with Rocky Papasanso (Steve McQueen). Initally, Angie desires only to track down Rocky to get the money needed for her to terminate the pregnancy. She changes her mind after meeting the unscrupulous doctor who would perform the procedure, and begins dating ordinary cook Anthony (Tom Bosley, in a scene-stealing performance). But when fate brings Rocky back into her orbit, the lovers must come to grips with the consequences of their previous affair as they contemplate what, if any, future they have together.

Despite its controversial subject matter, Love with the Proper Stranger was a critical and commercial success, earning both leads Academy Award nominations (the film garnered five nods in all, including one for Edith Head’s stunning costume work).
