Harrison Ford: Han Solo vs. Indiana Jones

Harrison Ford: Han Solo vs. Indiana Jones

One actor. Two film roles. You tell us which portrayal was the best. The most memorable. Or iconic. Or simply your favorite.

But before you pass judgment, a few words defending the “character” of each…

The case for Han Solo

Star Wars is the best movie of all-time and Han Solo is the coolest character of all-time. Case closed.

The case for Indiana Jones

Raiders of the Lost Ark is the best movie of all-time and Indiana Jones is the coolest cat ever. Period.

Now that you’ve heard the arguments for both it’s time to render your verdict!

Han Solo and Indiana Jones are basically cardboard characters. Ford is good in both roles, but they do not show off his acting ability as much as other parts he has played. I really enjoyed his work in Working Girl, and thought he displayed heroic qualities in Air Force One, A Clear and Present Danger, Patriot Games and The Fugitive.

I think both Han and Indy develop and show their depths as the series proceed. Look at Han in TESB–he falls in love! In ANH you’d get the impression that the only thing he loved was money–even Leia says so.
As for which I like better, I admit that when SW fandom was thick on the ground, I was a Han-atic, as we called them. But that didn’t mean I didn’t like Indy too. I think anyone who likes larger-than-life, heroic-somewhat-against-their-better-judgment characters would find it very difficult to make the choice. Granted, Han exists in a science-fiction universe, and Indy presumably in our regular one–though some pretty fantastic things happen to him in both Raiders and Crusade. Maybe it just depends on the mood you’re in!

Why compare them!!!! The two greatest movie characters played by one of the greatest actors.

    • Unclees

      I agree with you, Jim.

Star Wars was the scifi film I yearned for, even the next two sequels. As good as it is, I don’t like the newer ones nearly as much. I do feel that the charactors have little depth. Indiana Jones is more closely tied to a real world and easier to relate to. Still not much depth to the charactors. Indie seems more real than Han, but both series suffer from the same malady. They try to use more effects, getting farther from the believable to stretch the money train. ( I still watch them often).Give me Han/Indie In Hunt for red Oct., An actor should make you feel like you are there and you feellike you know him, or her.

Harrrison Ford was not in “The Hunt For Red October”. Jack Ryan was played by Alec Baldwin in that one. Harrison took over the role in “Patriot Games”.

    Indiana Jones.

Hands down, there is no contest. Harrison Ford is great in both. Can’t possible choose. Of course, I also loved Air Force One. Makes us wish we had a REAL president today!!!

His Indiana Jones character hands down.

  • DollyT

They cannot be compared because the moods generated are completely different. They demonstrate his versatility as broad spectrum actor. No type casting here.

  • simbasguard

Indiana Jones is the greatest action hero of the 20th Century!! – On the other hand, Han IS from a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away – so I suppose he could be the greatest action hero of HIS century… 😉

its gotta be han solo !!!

  • azbasketlady

It’s a tie…cannot think of anything that makes on stand out over the other.

  • Blue Carbuncle

Harrison Ford is the Jimmy Stewart of his generation. It doesn’t matter what role he plays, Han Solo, Indiana Jones, Jack Ryan, Branch Rickey, the President of the U.S. or most of his myriad of roles, the same person with the same gestures, same reactions, same phrases (“It’s not my fault !”) still shines through.
Stewart played everything from ballplayers to politicians to aviators to cowboys, and we always knew what to expect. Deep down a basically decent human being trying to survive against the odds. Ford brings us that same expectation and it’s why his movies are so successful and he is so revered by his fans.

  • Dana Thompson

Oh I would have to choose Indiana Jones, love that character, my son might disagree with me, He loves Ford as an actor, loves both these characters, but I think he would go with Solo

  • Lance Liebl Sr.

actually Harrison Ford is a combination of James Stewart, Errol Flynn and Burt Lancaster

  • John Patterson

    Indiana Jones!!
