We lost an entertainment giant over the weekend when comedian, actor and author Richard Belzer died at the age of 78 in his home in France. A staple on the stand up comedy circuit of the 1970s and ’80s, Belzer made an unexpected transition into dramatic acting when he undertook the role of his life — world weary detective John Munch — the the acclaimed 1990s crime drama Homicide: Life on the Street. He went on to play the role over a dozen times, most notably a lengthy stint on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit.
