Six Pix: Autumn Movies

Six Pix presents a sextet of movie posters representing a particular actor/director/theme. You pick the one you feel is visually the most artistic or best sums up the films.

This time around we take a look at seasonal cinema. The Autumnal Equinox occurred earlier this week, which means that up here in the Northern Hemisphere the days are getting shorter. And as they do, the birds start flying south, the leaves begin to change colors, and the supermarkets dedicate whole aisles to “Pumpkin Spice” comestibles. To me Fall has always been a rather reflective season, and it appears that many filmmakers share my opinion. Pictures with “Autumn” in their name have been more introspective and character-driven than, say, Spring Break or I Know What You Did Last Summer.

To prove the point, above are posters for six movies that each feature “Autumn” somehwere in the title. The stories range from John Ford’s final Western saga and an offbeat frontier vengeance tale with Jack Elam to a somber (naturally) mother/daughter drama by Ingmar Bergman and a New York-based Hong Kong love story starring Chow Yun Fat. There’s also a pair of melancholy May/December romances featuring Joan Crawford with Cliff Robertson and Richard Gere with Winona Ryder.

Now comes the part where we invite you to get into on the Autumnal action. Which of these films best embodies the feelings of Fall to you, or is the title you most associate with the season not here? Either way, tell us about it the comments.
