Well, what better time to celebrate the films of Fredric March than during the month of March? Born Ernest Frederick McIntyre Bickel in 1897, the Wisconsin native was employed as a banker in New York City when an appendectomy led him to consider a career change. Finding extra work in the Big Apple’s silent film industry, March made his Broadway debut in 1926 (his stage surname based on his mother’s maiden name). Over the next five decades he would earn fame as one of the stage and screen’s most versatile leading men, equally adept at drama and comedy and able to play action, horror, and historical roles. Before his death in 1975, March would go on to win two Academy Awards as well as two Tony Awards for his work (a record he shares with Helen Hayes).
