Is it hyperbole to call Daniel Clowes the Stan Lee of independent comics? Perhaps…but it might also be accurate. Exploding onto the scene in the late-1980s with his seminal comics anthology Eightball, Clowes quickly found an audience with his quirky, sometimes misanthropic and downbeat storytelling. His works are always slice of life, but focused on individuals who life in the fringes of society. Given his unique view of the world and status among his peers in the tight-knit indie comic world, it was something of a shock that he went Hollywood by writing the screenplay for the adaptation of his Ghost World stories. (To be clear, his Hollywood experiences still cater to the outsiders and misfits, thankfully).
On this week’s must-hear installment of The Movies That Made Me, Clowes discusses his film work as well as what films he’s taken to his heart with hosts Josh Olson and Joe Dante. After you give it a listen, head over to Movies Unlimited’s Companion Page for the episode and gain a peek into the mind of a true comics master.
