Remembering Louise Fletcher: 1934-2022

Another unique actress has left us. Louise Fletcher, whose performance as the brutal Nurse Ratched in 1975’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress, died at the age of 88 in her home in France on September 23rd. Although the sinister alleged caretaker was her best known role, Fletcher’s career was full of compelling, unforgettable roles both in films and on television. Take for example her time as the power-hungry Vedek Winn on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Although she only appeared on 14 episodes of the show’s seven series, her presence was always felt on screen. Fletcher commanded attention on screen, be it in starring or supportive roles, and as such she will be remembered as one of the most gifted actresses of her age.
