Although it initially under-performed at the box office upon its release in June of 1986, Labryinth has gone on to become a cult masterpiece. Simply put, this was a film that was ahead of its time. Directed by Jim Henson and starring David Bowie (in a scenery-chewing performance) and Jennifer Connelly, the movie is part mind-trip, part fairytale, all entertainment.
Audiences of the era weren’t willing to give Henson the opportunity to work outside of his Muppet comfort zone, which was also a problem that befell The Dark Crystal. But following his passing in 1990, his not-Muppet works underwent a commercial and critical re-evaluation, and people finally caught up to his incredible vision that was completely different and just as amazing as the material he created with Kermit, Miss Piggy, et al.
