Psycho (1960)

Arguably Alfred Hitchcock’s most popular film, this classic chiller, based on Robert Bloch’s novel, is still making people terrified of showers. On the run after stealing $40,000 from her boss, secretary Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) has a fateful encounter with creepy mama’s-boy hotel clerk Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins). Just what is Norman’s sinister secret? And whatever happened to Mrs. Bates? With Vera Miles, John Gavin, Martin Balsam; score by Bernard Herrmann.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

Director Don Siegel’s original sci-fi classic, combining outer space horror with Cold War paranoia, is set in a small California town whose residents are being replaced by emotionless replicas grown from mysterious alien seed pods. Can the invasion be stopped? Kevin McCarthy, Dana Wynter, King Donovan, and Carolyn Jones star in this adaptation of Jack Finney’s novel “The Body Snatchers.”

Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988)

TV’s campy queen of creature features makes her scream screen debut in an outrageous comedy. When her great-aunt dies, Elvira (Cassandra Peterson) inherits the family estate in Massachusetts. But she soon must deal with a scheming great-uncle (W. Morgan Sheppard) and hostile townsfolk who don’t take kindly to her outrageous lifestyle and sexy wardrobe. The Howling (1981)

Amazing special effects and a furry sense of humor highlight this Joe Dante scareshow about L.A. TV anchorwoman Karen White (Dee Wallace), who after a terrifying event, goes on vacation at the Colony, a remote California rest resort. Once there, White finds the Colony is home to a host of strange characters, who all seem to be vicious werewolves. John Sayles loosely adapted the Gary Brandner novel; with Christopher Stone, Patrick Macnee, Kevin McCarthy, John Carradine.

The Birds (1963)

Nature runs amok in Alfred Hitchcock’s loose adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s novelette. After an encounter in a San Francisco bird shop, wealthy socialite Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren) follows handsome Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor) to a small California coastal town that is soon under attack by gulls, crows, and other fine feathered “friends.” Jessica Tandy, Veronica Cartwright, Suzanne Pleshette also star in this classic shocker.
