Marlon Brando Delivers a Luminous Performance In “The Nightcomers”

Earning mixed reviews upon its original 1972 release (despite the fact that star Marlon Brando won a BAFTA — the UK equivalent of an Academy Award — for his performance), the British film The Nightcomers has gone on to become a cult favorite. An inspired, audacious prequel to Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw, this blend of thriller and drama features Brando as Peter Quint, a drunken lout hired by a Victorian family as a gardener. He proceeds to seduce the governess (Stephanie Beacham) and gives the children some very unusual lessons on loving others. Thora Hird, Harry Andrews, Verna Harvey, Christopher Ellis also star; directed by Michael Winner (of the Death Wish series fame).

Long unavailable, the movie comes to Blu-ray this week with the following special features:

– Audio Commentary by director Michael Winner

– Introduction by Michael Winner

– New Audio Commentary by Film Historian Kat Ellinger

– Theatrical Trailer
