Remembering Peter Mayhew: The Man Who Brought Chewbacca To Life

We wanted to take a moment today to acknowledge a significant passing from the world of entertainment. You may not have known his name, but chances are more than likely that Peter Mayhew enriched your life. The English-American actor who stood at 7-feet, 3-inches became an overnight sensation for portraying Chewbacca, Han Solo’s right-hand wookie in the Star Wars films. Mayhew died of a heart attack at the age of 74 in his Texas home on April 30th, leaving behind his devoted wife, Angie, their three children, and millions of fans across the globe.

Above is Mark Hamill‘s tribute to Mayhew, and in an statement to The Hollywood Reporter Harrison Ford said the following about his on-screen sidekick:

“Peter Mayhew was a kind and gentle man, possessed of great dignity and noble character,” said the actor. “These aspects of his own personality, plus his wit and grace, he brought to Chewbacca. We were partners in film and friends in life for over 30 years and I loved him. He invested his soul in the character and brought great pleasure to the Star Wars audience.”

Continued Ford, “Chewbacca was an important part of the success of the films we made together. He knew how important the fans of the franchise were to its continued success and he was devoted to them. I and millions of others will never forget Peter and what he gave us all. My thoughts are with his dear wife Angie and his children. Rest easy, my dear friend…. “

Chewbacca is an unforgettable character, one who was brought vividly to life by Peter Mayhew — a man who was truly a gentle giant.
