Kevin Costner and Tom Cruise. Two guys I could go the rest of my life without watching. I loved the Untouchables simply because Robert De Niro was in it, and even Costner couldn’t ruin a movie with De Niro in it. (I don[‘t think Cruise could either, but lets not tempt fate…) Really, the only movie that has Kevin Costner in it in which I actually liked his acting was Silverado.

To me, the issue with Cruise is more that I don’t like the movies he is in than his acting per se. At least for the last 20 years or so. He used to be a good actor in good movies, such as Born on the 4th of July.

I thought Bull Durham, Dances With Wolves and The Untouchables were really good movies that I enjoyed watching very much. Open Range however is my favorite, and Costner is perfect in the Charley Waite role. You have to stop the movie about fifteen minutes before the end though, terrible long-drawn-out ending, they would have been better off with stereotypical riding-off-into-the-sunset ending.

    The Upside of Anger

  • Tom K.

Some years ago, we bought the Director’s Cut of Dances with Wolves – on VHS – which has some extended scenes. The pre-wedding scene with Wind in his Hair and Smiles A-Lot was just outstanding. My nieces and nephews still watch it once every Summer.

I really enjoyed McFarland, USA. But, it is hard to think of a worse movie than Waterworld – and I like Sci Fi. Maybe that’s why I hated that movie.
