What’s Your Favorite Summer Blockbuster?

The 4th of July is just around the corner, and with it we find our thoughts turning to what movies we’ve enjoyed in the summers past. Ever since Jaws ushered in the era of the summer blockbuster in 1975 — can you believe it has been 42 years since that came out? — movie studios have attempted to outdo themselves every time the season rolls around. For this week’s Open Thread, we want you to tell us what your favorite summer blockbuster is and why. Whether it be a classic like Star Wars or more recent fare like Guardians of the Galaxy, we encourage you to share your movie memories with us in the comments below!

Jaws, easily. It feels the most like a summer movie, showing average people enjoying the season.

No contest: the first “Star Wars.” I must have seen it 30 times; there was a day when I could recite the entire script from memory. Next after that, “ST: The Wrath of Khan.”

Jaws… because you can almost smell the salt water and the film doesn’t slow down… not even for a minute…

Jaws, I can still watch it over and over again. I love Richard Dryfuss in this movie. It was in 1975, I was 26, what more can I say. I have a million movies I love, the Exorcist was another movie that really stands out for me and I never get tired of seeing.

Jurassic Park! The movie was wonderful, from the story to the special effects. I’ve seen it at least a dozen times.

My cousin & her two girlfriends visited us at the Gulf of Mexico – we “beached” ever day, Summer of ’75. Did Not take them to the “Jaws” premiere and spoil their vacation. That Fall, my buddy and I flew out to the Great Salt Lake for one of the girlfriend’s wedding and took the girls to see ” JAWS ” on the big screen ! The opening scene almost did them in, but being hardy pioneer girls, they stuck it out. What great fun we have on the day before the first day of Summer emailing the “Jaws” theme song and other movie related memories. I have “Jaws” on VHS – DVD – and in our DVR ! If you’re going to have that much fun, “you’re gonna’ need a bigger boat”. Okay, music maestro !
