In a world that seems to be becoming increasingly fractured, one thing that can still unite people is this: A shared love of Bill Murray. Since becoming a comedy superstar during his run on Saturday Night Live, Murray’s career has taken him from blockbuster movies like Stripes and Ghostbusters to acclaimed indie fare ranging from Broken Flowers to St. Vincent. Along the way, Murray has continued to do things his way, bucking the traditional Hollywood model of success for his own unique way of doing things. (Which often includes showing up in the most unlikely of places). His popularity is so great that he is regularly the subject of fawning think pieces like this one, proving once more that Murray is more than just another actor, he’s a national treasure. And I don’t think any of us have fully begun to realize the impact he has had upon not only the entertainment industry, but the world at large. Maybe I’m just being hyperbolic, but you’ve gotta admit, Bill is the best.
