Sissy Spacek: Carrie White vs. Loretta Lynn

SpacekSissy Spacek: Carrie White vs. Loretta Lynn

One actor. Two film roles. You tell us which portrayal was the best. The most memorable. Or iconic. Or simply your favorite.

But before you pass judgment, a few words defending the “character” of each…

The case for Loretta Lynn

It’s a fact that Sissy had a difficult time deciding whether to accept the role of Coal Miner’s Daughter. Loretta Lynn had no such reservations, personally choosing her for the part. So how’d it turn out? Pretty good. Not only did Sissy nab Best Actress awards from the Golden Globes, the National Board of Review, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, the New York Film Critics Circle, as well as a little statuette called Oscar, but she also did her own singing and—guess what?—was nominated for a Grammy! Yeah, I’d say that turned out pretty good.

The case for Carrie White

If you’ve ever felt vulnerable. Ever been an outcast. The misfit toy. The freak. A minority. The one on the outside looking in. Slighted. Ignored. Mistreated or misunderstood. If you’ve ever felt helpless or hopeless. Then you know Carrie. Sissy Spacek wrote the name Carrie into our modern lexicon as synonymous with all those things.

Now that you’ve heard the arguments for both it’s time to render your verdict!
