Newman/Redford: Butch & Sundance vs. Gondorff & Hooker

Butch & Sundance vs. Gondorff & Hooker

We’re shaking things up this time. Instead of the “one actor, two film roles” norm, we have the acting duo of Robert Redford and Paul Newman in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and The Sting. Two magnificent movies! And two equally superb performances from them both.

So we ask of you as we always do: Tell us which portrayal was the best. The most memorable. Or iconic. Or simply your favorite.

But before you pass judgment, a few words defending the “character” of each…

.

The case for Butch & Sundance

This one’s a no-brainer. Has there been a closer actor-character association than that of Robert Redford’s Sundance Kid (think Sundance Film Festival) and Paul Newman’s Butch Cassidy (and his Hole in the Wall Gang camp for sick kids)? Talk about iconic!

The case for Gondorff & Hooker

Iconic, sure. But who do you actually like better? Nobody pulled off the art of the con better—and with such panache—than Gondorff & Hooker in The Sting. Those characters (and the movie itself) are a delight to watch again & again…can you really say the same about Butch & Sundance?

Now that you’ve heard the arguments for both it’s time to render your verdict!
