Six Pix presents a sextet of movie posters representing a particular actor/director/genre. You pick the one you feel is visually the most artistic or best sums up the film.
And we say b&w, we mean it…except for the title there are no other tones allowed for these Six Pix.
Included are: The Godfather (1972); The Graduate (1967); Sennentuntschi: Curse of the Alps (2010); Ray (2004); Buried (2010); and Men in Black 3 (2012).
Truth be told, I had a very hard time trying to find a half dozen b&w posters that had absolutely no shades of gray nor colors of any kind. But on the ones I did track down the stark graphics were both compelling and inventive. Men in Black, for instance, creates Will Smith’s distinctive silhouette using only lettering of various thickness. Buried conveys both depth and confinement in a jagged, disorienting swirl—a la Saul Bass. And The Godfather’s “man who pulls the strings” illustration is iconic. For me, though, the elegant line drawing of Mrs. Robinson’s leg under which appears the tiny, black cloaked graduate masterfully echoes the famous scene and sums up the underlying themes of the movie.
