You can add another impressive library to go with the several Warner Brothers already owns.
Warner Home Video–which controls the DVD rights to Warner Brothers, RKO Pictures, part of the Allied Artists library and old MGM releases– has just added 74 titles from the Samuel Goldwyn Jr. Family Trust, an impressive array of classic films produced by the Samuel Goldwyn Company that Warner will likely begin to issue on DVD in the fourth quarter of 2012.
According to Warner officials, the Goldwyn pictures will be put on DVD as part of Turner Classic Movie (TCM) collections and as new entries in the Warner Archives. The Goldwyn library has moved around the home video market, variously distributed over the years by Embassy Home Entertainment, HBO and MGM/UA Home Entertainment.
The Goldwyn titles acquired include The Best Years of Our Lives, Ball of Fire, Barbary Coast, The Bishop’s Wife, Dead End, Dodsworth, Guys and Dolls, Hans Christian Andersen, The Kid from Brooklyn, The Little Foxes, The Pride of the Yankees, The Princess and the Pirate, Roman Scandals, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Stella Dallas (both the 1925 and the 1937 versions), Wonder Man and the much-requested Wuthering Heights.
A Warner spokesperson noted many of the silent films from Goldwyn—including The Awakening, Dark Angel and A Thief in Paradise—will likely be released as Warner Archives titles, while other films “where practical in terms of restoration” will also be issued on Blu-ray.
