Mike Myers: Austin Powers vs. Dr. Evil

One actor. Two film roles. You tell us which portrayal was the best. The most memorable. Or iconic. Or simply your favorite.

But before you pass judgment, a few words defending the “character” of each…

The case for Dr. Evil

When Myers created an arch nemesis for Austin Powers I wonder if even he thought Dr. Evil would rival—if not overtake—the suave superspy in popularity? Dr. Evil’s villainous roots may be in the sixties, but his motivations/actions are not expressly tied to that decade—unlike Austin, a true child of the ‘60s. Arch an eyebrow and put your pinky to your lips and everybody knows you’re Evil! And, besides, as the good doctor said, “There’s nothing as pathetic as an aging hipster.”

The case for Austin Powers

“Do I make you horny? Randy? Do I make you horny, baby, yeah, do I?” asks the sexy British agent. Well, his bad teeth, chest full of hair, and ‘60s Carnaby Street wardrobe don’t exactly turn me on, but Myers’ hilarious James Bond lampoon definitely swings! His zippy one-liners, clever sight gags, and general befuddlement with all things modern elevated the character from mere parody to a true original…with tons of mojo! “Yeah, baby!”

Now that you’ve heard the arguments for both it’s time to render your verdict!
