After six relatively quiet decades as a museum and occasional protest site, Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay found itself in the national spotlight last week, as the White House floated the idea of reopening the site’s notorious prison facilities. From 1934 to 1963, it was the country’s most infamous federal penitentiary. Among its more notable “guests” were “Scarface” Al Capone, “Machine Gun” Kelly, Alvin “Creepy” Karpis, and “Birdman” Robert Stroud (who, ironically, didn’t keep any birds there).
Ever since it opened, Alcatraz has captured the attention of Hollywood, who used the “escape-proof” prison as the setting for a variety of films and TV shows, some more realistic (The Last Gangster, Escape from Alcatraz) than others (Skidoo, X-Men: The Last Stand). For this week’s poll, we’d asking you which movie set in part or in whole on “The Rock” (and yes, The Rock counts) is your favorite. If your top Alcatraz adventure isn’t listed, tell us about it in the comments below.
