What Horror Movies Do You Think Are Overrated?

Recently, film legend John Carpenter made headlines when he declared that he didn’t know what “elevated horror” was. The term has been used to describe motion pictures that tackle creepy ideas and dark themes with art film aesthetics. (Think pretty much the entire output of A24). While I personally am a fan of such titles in this, let’s face it, manufactured by “Film Twitter”, genre like Midsommar, I can also see how these sorts of movies are considered more pretentious than frightening.

Which brings us to the point of this Open Thread: What horror movies — elevated or not — do you think are overrated and why? Is there a recent scarefest that everyone seems to love but leaves you cold? Do Michael Myers and Freddy Kruger annoy you more than scare? Name names of these overblown flicks in the comments. This is sure to be an enlightening, if somewhat divisive, topic for discussion, so have at it below!
