We lost one of the true greats with the passing of Ed Asner, who died yesterday at the age of 91. The much acclaimed actor who specialized in gruff-but-lovable figures like Lou Grant (whom he portrayed on The Mary Tyler Moore Show and its dramatic spin-off — a television rarity in which the same person played the same character in series from two different genres). Throughout his decade and centure-spanning career, he explored the human condition in a truly impressive array of roles, both in live-action and animation (Disney/Pixar’s Up was a glorious recent showcase of his talents). Although he may have sometimes seemed stern in his professional life, Asner the man was one of Hollywood’s kindest individuals, either by sharing his wisdom with rising stars or giving support to fledging projects. He was also a respected activist, who dedicated so much of his time to helping the causes he felt passionate about. As we pay tribute to Asner, we ask you to vote for your favorite of his many performances below, and share your thoughts on the work he leaves behind in the comments.
