Over the weekend, acclaimed character actress Olympia Dukakis died at the age of 89. Beginning her career in the early 1960s on stage in New York City, she quickly established herself as a performer whose humanity and intensity helped her stand out. Roles on television and in film soon followed, with her most beloved performances being in Moonstruck (for which she won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar), Steel Magnolias, Working Girl and in the acclaimed series Tales of the City , the 1993 original and the 1998 and 2019 revivals.
