Tom Hanks in “Inferno” Leads Off This Week’s DVD/Blu-ray New Releases

The latest chapter in the saga of The Da Vinci Code leads off this week’s new releases. Along with some other lower profile but just as worthwhile offerings. Take a look at this rundown of what’s now available:

Inferno

In this third globe-trotting screen adventure of Dan Brown’s indefatigable iconologist Prof. Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks)–and another partnering for the star and director Ron Howard–a demented entrepreneur (Ben Foster) has decided to combat global overpopulation by unleashing a killer virus, and Langdon must unravel the madman’s skein of Dante-themed clues to in order to find the doomsday weapon. Potent thriller co-stars Felicity Jones, Sidse Babett Knudsen, Irrfan Khan, Omar Sy.

U.S.S. Indianapolis: Men of Courage

Under the taut command of Captain Charles McVay (Nicolas Cage), the WWII warship Indianapolis earned the duty of delivering atomic materiel for the bombing of Japan. Fate would hand McVay a greater challenge on the return voyage, as the ship was sunk by an enemy sub…and 900 crewmen faced a harrowing five days attempting to survive in shark-infested waters. Mario Van Peebles’ gritty true-life tale also stars Tom Sizemore, Thomas Jane, Matt Lanter, James Remar, Emily Tennant.

The Vessel

In this powerful faith-based drama from executive producer Terrence Malick (The Tree of Life), Martin Sheen (The West Wing, The Departed) stars as a locl priest of a Latin American fishing village recovering from a tsunami that washed away dozens of elementary school students. Ten years later, one of the young villagers miraculously comes back to life, and the whole town wonders if he is a sign from God.

I’m Not Ashamed

I’m Not Ashamed is the inspiring and powerful true story of Rachel Joy Scott- the first student killed in the Columbine high school shooting in 1999. Devout teen Rachel Joy Scott (Masey McLain) shows compassion and love for her fellow students, until armed classmates enter Columbine High School on a fateful day that changes America forever. The Light Between Oceans

For World War I vet Tom Sherbourne (Michael Fassbender) and his bride Isabel (Alicia Vikander), the isolated life of a lighthouse keeper off Australia’s coast was their preference…though she was heartbroken by their inability to conceive. After a skiff containing an infant girl and her father’s corpse ran ashore, Tom acquiesced to his wife’s demands that they leave it unreported, and hold the child out as their own…setting up greater tragedy years later when a stranger (Rachel Weisz) came asking questions.
