Having already conquered sky spoofs with Airplane!, the Zucker/Abrahams/Zucker team set their comedic sights on crime shows with their short-lived series Police Squad!. Although the show was cancelled prematurely, Leslie Nielsen‘s bumbling Frank Drebin wouldn’t be out of commission for long. In 1988 he made his big screen debut in The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!. The film — which features, among other things, a stuffed beaver, a daytime fireworks display, a brainwashed Reggie Jackson and a disgraced opera singer — became a huge hit at the box office. (Two hit-or-miss sequels followed). The original is still the best, with The Naked Gun firing jokes at an exhausting pace. Above is the movie’s original trailer, and to paraphrase the song featured in its most memorable montage, audiences who check it out are still into something good, most definitely.
