Based on Alice Walker\u2019s Pulitzer Prize best-selling book,<em> The Color Purple<\/em> tells the story of Celie (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Whoopi%20Goldberg%7C852318&amp;mod=AP&amp;_gl=1*xfp87a*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Whoopi Goldberg<\/a>), a young girl sexually abused by her supposed father (which produced two children that were taken away from her).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59524\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-PURPLE-3.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-PURPLE-3.webp 500w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-PURPLE-3-300x204.webp 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Celie is given away to widower Mister (a mean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Danny%20Glover%7C169947&amp;mod=AP&amp;_gl=1*15yy1vc*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Danny Glover<\/a>) for marriage; her sister Nettie was his first choice. She takes care of his undisciplined children and his house while putting up with beatings from him. When Nettie (Akosua Busia) comes to live with them, Mister eyes her as a sexual conquest, but she fights him off and is thrown out of his house. It causes Celie to lose the only person who truly loves her. Nettie writes to Celie, but Mister hides her letters.<\/p>\n<p>One of his children, Harpo (Willard Pugh) marries the headstrong Sofia (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Oprah%20Winfrey%7C339913&amp;mod=AP&amp;_gl=1*qefnsy*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Oprah Winfrey<\/a>), and sparks fly when he tries to control her the same way his father controls Celie. Sofia is having none of that and she eventually leaves. Things further change with the arrival of Shug Avery (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Margaret%20Avery%7C304859&amp;mod=AP&amp;_gl=1*ph7urj*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Margaret Avery<\/a>), a vibrant singer whom Mister is infatuated with and who awakens something in Celie.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59526\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"636\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-5.jpg 636w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-5-300x179.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This leads to a confrontation with Mister at dinner when Shug announces Celie will be leaving with her and her husband. He balks and tells her she\u2019s \u201cugly, skinny, shaped funny, and too scared to open your mouth to people.&#8221; And in one of the most forceful scenes of the movie, Celie replies \u201cUntil you do right by me, everything you think about is going to crumble,\u201d and a little later she says \u201cThe jail you planned for me, is the one you\u2019re going to rot in.&#8221; Finally, a reckoning comes for Mister and his abuse.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-59525\" src=\"http:\/\/www.moviefanfare.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-PURPLE-4.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-PURPLE-4.jpeg 620w, https:\/\/onecinephile.wpenginepowered.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/MFF-COLOR-PURPLE-4-300x174.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Whoopi Goldberg gives such a powerful performance it\u2019s hard to imagine how she didn\u2019t win the Best Actress Oscar (she lost to Geraldine Page in <em>The Trip to Bountiful)<\/em>. Oprah Winfrey in her film debut also shines as the willful Sofia. And Margaret Avery provides fireworks every time she\u2019s on screen. The film inspired a successful Broadway musical version (produced by Oprah) which was made into a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/the-color-purple-2023\/883929802609?_gl=1*66mzkm*_up*MQ..&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQjwrMKmBhCJARIsAHuEAPSuSiMeVGR3GjhyTUkl1IBr1lZn78DqL7AjR08r3rqvZ8UjLD8uUXsaAvLHEALw_wcB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">2023 movie<\/a> starring Taraji P. Henson, Danielle Brooks, and<em> American Idol<\/em> alumni Fantasia Barrino as Celie.
