In 1986 he decided that the best way to get a true adaptation was for him to take the reins himself He not only was the screenwriter for the adaptation of his short story <em>Trucks<\/em> but he even went so far as to be the director of the film (so far his only endeavor in that role).<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ggWS4tTzs60\" width=\"640\" height=\"385\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The movie preview is a study in cheese in its own right.\u00a0 King himself guarantees that he is &#8220;going to scare the hell out of you&#8221; and it ends with probably the most laughable tag line: Maximum terror. Maximum King. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=Dino+de+Laurentis&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dino de Laurentis<\/a> presents Stephen King&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/maximum-overdrive-vestron-video-collectors-series\/031398294139\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>Maximum Overdrive<\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Okay, it may not be laughable in print, but to hear the voice of the classic movie trailer narrator, I think it might be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=Don+La+Fontaine&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Don La Fontaine<\/a> who did a lot of these types of movies, it sounds kind of hilarious.<\/p>\n<p>The movie itself does not live up to King&#8217;s prediction, I have to admit.\u00a0 At least I wasn&#8217;t scared.\u00a0 But it is a pretty good movie nonetheless. Possessed semis have it hands down over most of the possessed cars movies out there (not including<em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/christine-35th-anniversary\/043396529069\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christine<\/a><\/em>, another Stephen King entry).<\/p>\n<p><b>Maximum Overdrive<\/b> (1986)<\/p>\n<p>The essence of <i>Maximum Overdrive <\/i>is the appearance of a comet that, after it passes by Earth, leaves a tail in its wake (green and funky, much like that nasty orb Loc-nar from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/heavy-metal\/043396369290\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>Heavy Metal<\/i><\/a>).<i> <\/i>The upshot of this lingering comet wake &#8212; which the prologue states will be with the Earth for eight days &#8212; is that everything electrical and mechanical goes haywire.\u00a0 A scene, early in the movie, with Stephen King giving a nod to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=alfred+hitchcock&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Alfred Hitchcock<\/a> with a cameo, as an unsuspecting person being called an &#8220;asshole&#8221; by an ATM machine.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-fY40gpoFhPU\/Xz171u6V43I\/AAAAAAAAKJY\/qhZFAcZxwHEoUFol8KoSnVQz3Dbw2OpQQCLcBGAsYHQ\/s700\/mo3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-fY40gpoFhPU\/Xz171u6V43I\/AAAAAAAAKJY\/qhZFAcZxwHEoUFol8KoSnVQz3Dbw2OpQQCLcBGAsYHQ\/w410-h206\/mo3.jpg\" width=\"410\" height=\"206\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"351\" data-original-width=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The scene shifts to the Dixie Boy Truck Stop where our main action takes place. Here, obnoxious lowlife owner Bubba Hendershot (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=pat+hingle&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Pat Hingle<\/a>) runs the operation with an iron fist (and a less than reputable hand). He tells employee Bill (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=emilio+estevez&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Emilio Estevez)<\/a> that he wants him to work nine hours a day, but only clock-in for eight.\u00a0 As an incentive he holds up a time card with a star that indicates that Bill is on probation from the law, intimating that if he doesn&#8217;t comply, Hendershot will turn him in to his parole officer.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the comet&#8217;s tail starts to do its dirty work on the diner. All the trucks gain a life of their own.\u00a0 The ringleader of the gang of mechanical monstrosities is a truck carrying &#8220;Happy Toyz&#8221; with a front end decked out with the face of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=spider-man&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Spider-Man<\/a> enemy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=the+green+goblin&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">the Green Goblin <\/a>to bring home the fact that these trucks are the epitome of evil.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-VhqU7ngERgM\/Xz2ZZOZysLI\/AAAAAAAAKJs\/PxNu-xUWzbMa6GUyv9PlbimlJtFNsiwIgCLcBGAsYHQ\/s351\/mo5.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-VhqU7ngERgM\/Xz2ZZOZysLI\/AAAAAAAAKJs\/PxNu-xUWzbMa6GUyv9PlbimlJtFNsiwIgCLcBGAsYHQ\/s0\/mo5.jpg\" border=\"0\" data-original-height=\"150\" data-original-width=\"351\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The diner eventually garners a crew of people who straggle in from the onslaught of these new rulers of the earth, including a drifter, Brett (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=laura+harrington&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Laura Harrington<\/a>) and the sleazy traveling Bible salesman who picked her up, Camp (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=christopher+murney&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Christopher Murney<\/a>). Also a newlywed couple (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=yeardley+smith&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Yeardley Smith<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=john+short&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">John Short<\/a>) and a kid (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=holter+graham&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Holter Graham<\/a>) who has spent most of the movie biking across the country trying to avoid getting killed by these trucks. (The kid, it turns out, is the son of one of the truck stop employees).<\/p>\n<p>A battle occurs between the refugees in the truck stop and the trucks\u00a0 that surround them.\u00a0 This is helped by the fact that Hendershot has an entire armory stored in his basement.\u00a0 (A survivalist, maybe, expecting the end of the world?)\u00a0 But the trucks have their own arsenal, including a bulldozer and a portable rolling machine gun cart.<\/p>\n<p>About the only hint of anything totally ridiculous (if the concept of possessed machines isn&#8217;t already making you question that), is the hint, late in the movie and in the final closing credits that the comet may have been the product of an alien invasion to try to get rid of the humans so they could take over the planet. Really? Please, Steve, I give you much better credit than that.<br \/>\n<b><\/b><\/p>\n<p>The reviews on this movie at the time were pretty much all bad.\u00a0 It only has a 15% Fresh rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website\u00a0 According to a website a looked at <i>Variety<\/i> said this is the kind of movie that makes people want to talk back to the screen. (Remember th<i>e <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=seinfeld&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Seinfeld<\/a> <\/i>episode where the gang were on\u00a0 their way to watch\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=plan+9+from+outer+space&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Plan 9 from Outer Space<\/a> just so they could talk back to the screen? Or for those of you of that bent, every episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=mystery+science+theater+3000&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><i>Mystery Science Theater 3000<\/i>?<\/a>)\u00a0 To add insult to injury the movie garnered two Raspberry nominations &#8212; one for Emilio Estevez for worst actor and one to Stephen King for worst director.<\/p>\n<p>But the movie is not as bad as the film critics would lead us to believe.\u00a0 It does get a bit ridiculous in places and is not nearly as scary as, say,\u00a0<i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/carrie-1976\/883904123484\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Carrie<\/a> <\/i>or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=the+shining&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><em>The Shining<\/em><\/a>, but it is fun. Plus it has a killer soundtrack by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=ac%2Fdc&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">AC\/DC<\/a> which includes the made for this movie song &#8220;Who Made Who?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Jim Brymer, AKA Quiggy, runs the movie blog <a href=\"http:\/\/midnitedrive-in.blogspot.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Midnite Drive-In<\/a>, check it out for more insights on other classic films.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stephen King has always been one of my favorite authors.\u00a0 (For an in depth discussion of King and his influence on me, see my article on him here.)
