Of course, her being a big dog makes her have a big appetite and Joe&#8217;s parents (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Donald%20Crisp%7C185894&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Donald Crisp<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Elsa%20Lanchester%7C805334&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Elsa Lanchester<\/a>) just don&#8217;t have the money to support her, let alone themselves, being as poor as they are.<\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-vr7z4TAn8CE\/VAuDy6Ma6xI\/AAAAAAAADDc\/zpapNps0iSw\/s1600\/LassieCome3.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-vr7z4TAn8CE\/VAuDy6Ma6xI\/AAAAAAAADDc\/zpapNps0iSw\/s1600\/LassieCome3.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\"><i>Outside Lassie&#8217;s home<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>So to solve this situation they sell Lassie to a kindly dog breeder, the Duke of Rudling, (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Nigel%20Bruce%7C608694&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Nigel Bruce<\/a>) who takes her off to Scotland to groom for some upcoming shows. Lassie doesn&#8217;t enjoy the duke&#8217;s idea of prime accommodations however and decides to hike back to his master &#8211; it being only several hundred miles to home. On route to Yorkshire he meets a few kind souls who sustain him on his journey, one of them being Rowlie the &#8220;pots&#8221; man (played by the adorable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Edmund%20Gwenn%7C507836&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Edmund Gwenn<\/a>) and the Faddens, Daniel and Dally (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Ben%20Webster%7C507836&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Ben Webster<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Dame%20May%20Whitty%7C168759&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Dame May Whitty<\/a>).<\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-QimIeT65wJk\/VAuDzMqTpRI\/AAAAAAAADDg\/SjG5SNs2n4U\/s1600\/LassieCome4.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-QimIeT65wJk\/VAuDzMqTpRI\/AAAAAAAADDg\/SjG5SNs2n4U\/s1600\/LassieCome4.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\"><i>Who would sell a dog that can curtsy?<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Pal was a real ham when it came to acting and &#8211; viewer beware &#8211; you need a good pile of Kleenexes on hand to watch this film. If Academy Awards were given to animals then Lassie would have earned one hands down (I mean, paws down) for his performance here.<\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\" align=\"center\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-wG9NpIL2uro\/VAuDyQ9wC1I\/AAAAAAAADDY\/JOwUdLXAbFk\/s1600\/LassieCome16.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-wG9NpIL2uro\/VAuDyQ9wC1I\/AAAAAAAADDY\/JOwUdLXAbFk\/s1600\/LassieCome16.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"297\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\"><i>What a ham!<\/i><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Like most MGM films of the 1930s-1950s, Cedric Gibbons was billed as the art director with Edwin B. Willis handling the set decoration. Gibbons and Willis had a particular flair for creating old and weather-worn sets and the both the Clarracough and Fadden cottages have the look of being handed down from generations past.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-FQjExm2vcHY\/VAzoAW58b0I\/AAAAAAAADEg\/mPSOPhwJD8I\/s1600\/IMG_9589.JPG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/3.bp.blogspot.com\/-FQjExm2vcHY\/VAzoAW58b0I\/AAAAAAAADEg\/mPSOPhwJD8I\/s1600\/IMG_9589.JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"308\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a>As poor as Lassie&#8217;s family was it looks as though they lived in a bigger cottage than the Faddens for they had two bedrooms, with Joe having a room of his own upstairs. Downstairs there was only the main room, a country kitchen with fireplace and a round dining table which doubles as a desk for homework and sewing work.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Kgdd7yK0iyk\/VAuDyNfP2TI\/AAAAAAAADEE\/Npp5PGhG1l4\/s1600\/LassieCome11.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/2.bp.blogspot.com\/-Kgdd7yK0iyk\/VAuDyNfP2TI\/AAAAAAAADEE\/Npp5PGhG1l4\/s1600\/LassieCome11.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>In the Fadden cottage there is the main room as well with a door leading to the kitchen or possibly to the bedroom. It couldn&#8217;t be more than 800 square feet and yet how comfortable a home it is! Just the right size. For a couple and a dog, that is&#8230;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-jqDlSPj0C1I\/VAuDzu7xUxI\/AAAAAAAADEA\/bzlGfe3CZYo\/s1600\/LassieCome9.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/4.bp.blogspot.com\/-jqDlSPj0C1I\/VAuDzu7xUxI\/AAAAAAAADEA\/bzlGfe3CZYo\/s1600\/LassieCome9.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"298\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Another bit of interesting trivia : Ben Webster and May Whitty were husband and wife in real life and you can see their comradery in their scenes together. Reminds us of that other great acting couple: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?mod=AP&amp;cr=Stringer%20Davis|958538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Stringer Davis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?q=margaret+rutherford&amp;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Margaret Rutherford<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\"><a href=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-WscrvY7jP2A\/VAuDzZH58vI\/AAAAAAAADDs\/YhUur7OPw0M\/s1600\/LassieCome8.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/-WscrvY7jP2A\/VAuDzZH58vI\/AAAAAAAADDs\/YhUur7OPw0M\/s1600\/LassieCome8.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"296\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>After they rescue the poor wee dog during a rainstorm, Dally asks her husband to bring her some milk to feed Lassie with and we get to hear this wonderful bit of dialogue :<\/p>\n<p><i>&#8220;That&#8217;s the last of the milk Dally. Won&#8217;t be any for your tea tomorrow morning&#8221;<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i> <i>&#8220;It won&#8217;t matter Dan. I often think we do things just from habit. In America they say that they always drink their tea without milk&#8221;<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i> <i>&#8220;Well&#8230;. that&#8217;s because they haven&#8217;t learned any better&#8221;<\/i><br \/>\n<i><br \/>\n<\/i> Tsk, tsk, tsk&#8230;those Americans are something else.
