The film was released during a strange time that found Walt Disney Studios trying to remain relevant against an entertainment landscape that was dominated by gritty films and family pleasing blockbusters like <em>Star Wars<\/em>. In fact, there is an aww shucks old-fashionedness and a slower place that dominates <em>Pete&#8217;s Dragon<\/em>, which is also part of its enduring charm &#8212; something that is propelled even further by the chemistry of cast members <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Sean%20Marshall%7C953565&#038;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Sean Marshall<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Helen%20Reddy%7C811334&#038;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Helen Reddy<\/a> (who performs the film&#8217;s warmly remembered song &#8220;Candle on the Water&#8221;), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Jim%20Dale%7C815959&#038;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Jim Dale<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/search?cr=Mickey%20Rooney%7C829851&#038;mod=AP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Mickey Rooney<\/a>.
