There are few surer bets you can make than casting <a title=\"Will Smith\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/findresults_actor_smart.asp?search=Will+Smith\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Will Smith<\/a>. May 31st will put the Fresh Prince to an all-new test: resurrecting the career of one-time hot ticket writer\/director <a title=\"M. Night Shyamalan\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/findresults_director_smart.asp?search=M.+Night+Shyamalan\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">M. Night Shyamalan<\/a>, whose cachet has so diminished that <a title=\"Variety on the bankability of M. Night Shyamalan\" href=\"http:\/\/variety.com\/2013\/film\/news\/m-night-shyamalan-blackout-falls-on-after-earth-1200485989\/#!1\/673m-the-sixth-sense-1999\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">his name has been (very deliberately) all but obliterated <\/a>from the marketing campaign for the sci-fi action film <em>After Earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>That makes this the perfect time to take the pulse of Smith\u2019s career, which can at the very least be labeled spectacular without fear of overstatement. Smith passed on playing the title role in Quentin Tarantino\u2019s <a title=\"Django Unchained\" href=\"http:\/\/www.moviesunlimited.com\/musite\/findresults_title_smart.asp?search=Django+Unchained\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Django Unchained<\/a>&#8211;was that a bad move, or just the latest canny decision in successfully managing his uniquely powerful \u201ccrossover\u201d appeal?
