Lon Chaney‘s greatest role was as Erik, the scarred fiend lurking in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House who serves as an unseen mentor to beautiful Swedish soprano Christine Daaé (Mary Philbin), in the classic 1925 silent adaptation of Gaston Leroux’s novel.
