When the original A Nightmare on Elm Street was released back in 1984, audiences who checked out the Wes Craven screamfest had no way of knowing that they were witnessing the birth of an enduring horror franchise. Over 30 years later, and the saga of Freddy Krueger still endures (a new installment in the series is currently stalled in pre-production, and star Robert Englund has his own ideas about how to make Freddy scary for a new generation).
