"Time Tunnel" is one of those vintage shows I'd like to catch up to someday. I see we have two volumes of the show available...hmmm....now maybe I have something to watch after digging through the recent release of "Thriller."

Yes, it's an interesting mishmash -- I caught this years ago on one of those 3:00 p.m. "Metropolitan Movie" slots on local television back in the early '70s. A real mixed bag -- though perhaps one overlooked thing about "The Story of Mankind" is that it presaged Irwin Allen's other time travel foray, his 1966-67 television series "Time Tunnel." Tony Newman and Doug Phillips were randomly tossed from time period to time period -- and about 90% of the time they were in the past, because Allen's "historical" events were almost always based on some footage already sitting in the film studio's vault. Thus, they ended up on the Titanic, in India where the British were fighting going on with native tribesmen, at D-Day, in France during the Reign of Terror, at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, or at the Alamo -- anywhere, as long as some earlier producer had already spent the money recreating that place and time period!

Yes, it was an interesting movie that made you think but had some very odd casting and cheap sets. They might have been wiser to stick with the stock footage. Still, the main actors - Ronald Colman, Vincent Price, Cedric Hardwicke - were good.

Amazing that they were able to get so many really big stars for this movie when it's clearly a cheapie production. Agnes Moorehead actually makes a regal and lively Queen Elizabeth and her talent shines through in her brief scene. But poor Hedy Lamarr as Joan of Arc overdoes the wide eyes and hand gestures when she's hearing the voice of God. A camp classic.
