It’s Only A Movie… Right?

Movies are made for a variety of reasons. Usually, it’s to entertain and inform. However, in the process of accomplishing these goals it’s often necessary to commit scenes to film that depict pure evil, extreme awkwardness, or sometimes maybe even stage something that exorcises a filmmaker’s demons. And yes, these sordid dealings often involve sex. It’s subject matter that’s often not talked about by the Hollywood ilk. Sure, there are plenty of films that deal with the topic, and scores of celebrated love scenes, but when it comes to the darker side of sex in cinema, few folks have very much to say. That’s why, in the interest of illuminating the tremendous value and impact that these choices can have on a film’s narrative, here’s a sampling of some of the seedier moments in film. Regardless of how one feels about the material, there’s no denying that these scenes and/or movies are quite powerful.

Irreversible (2002): Truly a brutal and violent, but thoughtful film, it centers on the rape of Monica Bellucci in a dark alley. While the initial shock of this scene may seem exploitative at first, it definitely is not, and it’s doubtful that the film would work on the level that it does without it.

Deliverance (1972): Yes, the infamous “squeal like a pig” scene. The classic terrorfest of four men’s struggle for survival during a canoe trip is punctuated by an uncomfortable assault on Ned Beatty from a backwoods bad guy. Make no mistake that everyone, including the audience, is well aware of the gravity of the situation after this scene.

Basic Instinct (1992): Perhaps one of the most emphatic opening scenes ever produced, the film starts out with a woman who may or may not be Sharon Stone getting intimate with a fellow, only for him to soon meet his untimely end. The scene’s impact immediately sets a tense tone that lasts throughout the suspenseful tale.

The Brown Bunny (2003): Many may struggle to get through Vincent Gallo’s self-indulgent story about a lonely motorcyclist. However, it’s impossible to escape the punch of the extremely explicit scene Gallo shares with Chloe Sevigny to end the film. The controversial act was seemingly glossed over at the time of the film’s release, but regardless, Sevigny’s choice can only be described as daring. There’s no question that she’s definitely a method actress.

Descent (2007): Rosario Dawson is the victim of a date rape and exacts violent revenge on Chad Faust with the harrowing aid of Marcus Patrick in this stark film she co-produced. While the scene may initially seem excessive, it serves to paint a vivid portrayal of just how dark and painful the world of abuse victims can get.

Fast Times At Ridgemont High (1982): The rather clumsy and unromantic scene between Jennifer Jason Leigh and Robert Romanus deftly illustrates the awkwardness of youth. Sure, the movie is a comedy (and a real good one), but the tryst and its repercussions only serve to add to the trials of the American teenager, which is what screenwriter Cameron Crowe was trying to make known.

Bully

Bully (2001): Speaking of troubled youth, it perhaps has never been more grimly portrayed than in the handful of moments Rachel Miner, Bijou Phillips, Nick Stahl, and the late Brad Renfro share in a car. The fact that this horrid and sad tale about a crew of stupid and disaffected teens that kills one of their own is based on true events is even more frightening.

The Accused (1988): Jodie Foster’s heartbreaking performance of a rape victim denied justice deservedly won her an Oscar. Only real actors and filmmakers could make the scene in the bar work correctly, and they pull it off on an incredible level. After viewing it, no one will ever be able to comfortably view a pinball machine in the same way again.

Storytelling (2002): It’s real quick, but the night Selma Blair has with her literary professor Robert Wisdom is intense to state the very least. Race relations have perhaps never been explored in such a way. It’s doubtful that anyone can make an audience cringe like writer/director Todd Solondz can.

I Spit On Your Grave (1978): Arguably the sleaziest movie ever made, the production is certainly exploitative, but regardless, no one can argue the fact that they don’t make them like this anymore. The film is quite bold in its choices concerning a woman (Camille Keaton) who’s victimized throughout most of the release’s running time and then turns the tables on her attackers. For all its grindhouse shock value, the film is effective, and it has merit in that it certainly has a rightful and important place in film history. It also encourages everyone to respect the ladies, and that’s never a bad thing.

    Great choices, all of them. If I may add two more:
    Last Exit to Brooklyn - Jennifer Jason Leigh as prostitute Tralala who punishes herself by inviting/enduring a heartwrenching gang rape.
    Requiem for a Dream - Unflinching look at drug addiction takes a heavy toll on all characters here, but none moreso than Marion (Jennifer Connelly) whose sexual degradation at a bachelor party is excruciatingly painful to witness.

    Another haunting film exploring the darker side of sex is Nicholas Roeg's "Bad Timing," which stars Theresa Russell and Art Garfunkel. Watching the harrowing power struggle between these two lovers who alternately devour and destroy one another leaves the viewer wondering just how deeply our basic humanity can be disrupted by an obsession gone horribly wrong.

    The 1965 Charlton Heston film THE WAR LORD includes no overt sex scenes, but involves the
    bizarre medieval custom of "Droit du Signeur" - the ultimate expression of sexual exploitation.

    "Bad Lieutenant" with Harvey Keitel and directed by Abel Ferrara. A thoroughly excruciating film, but an excellent one, about one of the most distasteful characters ever portrayed, a NYC police officer fatally addicted to alcohol, drugs, gambling and sex. Keitel's performance was as courageous as any that I've witnessed.

    I'd nominate the entire movie "The Mist," 2007, directed by Frank Darabout and starring Thomas Jane. It's an vastly under-rated creature feature based on a short story by Stephen King -- now I'm not usually a fan or either King or bug movies, but this one stays with you and there are not just one or two, but maybe a dozen individual scenes where you find yourself saying, "I hope I didn't see what I just saw." The story, in short, has several dozen townspeople trapped in a Maine supermarket while the end of the world cranks up just outside the windows. Gross creatures from an alternate dimension wander around in the titular mist, making pate' out of passersby and trying to break into the store. The film is not, however, about the bugs -- rather it is the gradual but inevitable slide from civilization to barbarism that takes place inside. A religious extremist, the unstable Mrs. Carmody, goes about severing the last ties to sanity and civility and is the center of a couple of the most disturbing scenes in cinema. The ending is unforgetably heart-wrenching and, worst of all, it's a movie that draws the viewer back to see again and again -- never failing to shock. One of the best pictures of the genre.

    I would add the films Boys Don't Cry, The Crying Game and M. Butterfly. All amazing, all with very impacting scenes not only for the viewer but for the actors themselves.

    This week you can see IN A GLASS CAGE (TRAS EL CRISTAL) on blu-ray, Augustin Villaronga's creepy and discomforting arthouse shocker from 1986.
    It makes a great double-feature with the recent blu-ray release of A SERBIAN FILM (SRPSKI FILM), the latest international excursion into the most disturbing of sociopathologies.
    Middle-class moralist should steer clear of both these nightmare visions.

    What about "Blue Velvet"? Very well done, certainly disturbing, and a dark seedy movie. This movie was also known as "The Hardy Boys Go To Hell".

    Fast times? Really?????? That one doesn't fit here. I would replace that one with "The Grifters" for seedier drama movies.

    Diane Keaton's performance in "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" was well done, of course, but heart-wrenchingly depraved, misguided, and sad.

    Thanks to everyone for the suggestions in this genre. I'm still squeamish about viewing Irreversible but I have read so much about it I think I'm ready to take the plunge (no pun, honest). However, I WOULD like to hear what a female critic has to say about Irreversible before I view it and will search out a so-authored review. I've never heard of The Mist but will trust the informed commenters here and view it as soon as possible. I second the motion for "Goodbar" and "Bad Lieutenant" (!) and "Bully" but was never comfortable with "Blue Velvet" which makes me think I might not be a good candidate for Irreversible?

    What about the segment dealing with 'lust' in "SEVEN", one of the most disturbing films ever made? You may not see the actual act, but you do see the instrument that was used, and the man's hysterical confession/account of what he was made to do with it, makes you want to climb the walls!

    Mark Wahlberg as David McCall in 'Fear' (1996) was one of the creepiest, most disturbing performances in the past two decades. He ramped up the psychotic factor with his twisted, possessive passion for Reese Witherspoon's Nicole character by terrorizing her friends and family to achieve his own ends. I can't watch this film anymore - he's just unbridled evil wreaking mega-mayhem for his own selfish interests.

    "Seedy" = sex + shock for the sake of the narrative's intent to depict true evil/depravity while invoking an extremely visceral repugnance in the viewer? OK. I'm interested. I've had the same response to most films on your list and most of the added suggestions in the posted replies. Here are some more suggestions, but be careful and do your homework before you dare to view: Scorsese's remake of CAPE FEAR is not the most schocking but just try and sit still while DeNiro fingers Lewis' mouth. Jennifer Jason Leigh is pretty much a poster-child for seedy scenes, but don't discount her 'jacking in' and tweaking the nipple of her game-pod in Cronenberg's eXistenZe. If games and puzzles turn your crank, then HELLRAISER is sure to make you queazy. Akin's HEAD-ON, Figgis' LEAVING LAS VEGAS, Burke's THE MUDGE BOY, and Greenaway's THE BABY OF MaCON will mar your brain like, IRREVERSIBLE-y, dude. Christian Alvart's ANTIBODIES, Tommy Lee Jones' THE THREE BURIALS OF MELQUIADES ESTRADA, and Cronenberg's A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE will put some distance between husbands and wives. (We might as well admit that all of Cronenberg's efforts could be included in this list.) But, Bello will definitively end that argument in Renck's DOWNLOADING NANCY. As for Lynch, how long does it take to forget WILD AT HEART . . . with a dentally-prosthetic-Dafoe whispering in Dern's face!?! Try not flinching in the bloody fight between sexy Arquette and a demonic Gandolfini at the end of Scott's TRUE ROMANCE! Or get your 'group-on' with Ferrera's THE ADDICTION and Tykwer's PERFUME climax! Yeah. That's messed up.

    How about Cronenberg's film about the insane twin doctors? What were those gynocologic instruments they invented? Boy, that creeped me out.
