What a great story! To think there was a time when people could wait outside a studio (in NYC) and meet their favorite TV stars. Still love Dark Shadows, hope the remake captures the spirit (or spirits!)of the original.

@RAY BRAVO...

Hysterical, the story of the Confirmation name! I'm laughing think of a good Catholic boy wanting to take the name of a vampire... Brilliant.

@JACK....

You ain't a-kiddin' about the school bus doors - they could not open them fast enough!! My God, we would RUN down the street to catch the beginning of this show - books, coats, EVERYTHING just TOSSED any-damned-where to make sure that we wouldn't miss it.

...And Angelique..FASCINATING....I remember the storyline with her twin Alexis...Angelique had died, and was having a very novel funeral with her casket open in the graveyard. Alexis came to pay her respects and touched Angelique's corpse. Angelique opened her eyes and and took the "warmth" of her twin's life for her own -- well, it turned out that Alexis ended up in the box. Scared me for days. Lara Parker has intriqued me FOREVER.

Going through the show episode by episode can be "plodding", and, of course, you look at it through different eyes...but, what a show!

Jonathan Frid...HAD to be him for Halloween one year that I remember...and remember getting a DARK SHADOWS board game for a birthday when I wss in the 3rd Grade...complete with a set of fangs. I wore them out!!

Great article -- thanks for reminding me of Lara Parker, Jonathan Frid and DARK SHADOWS!

I was a big Dark Shadow fan. I would race home from school to watch it. When it came time for my Confirmation, I had to select a name. I found out Barnabas is a name from the bible. So I wanted barnabas as my confirmation name. My mom said know, saying I just wanted it because of the vampire character on TV. I settled for Timothy, my cousin name.
Great memories from that show.
Thanks,
Ray

Kate Jackson played Daphne in a sort of Wuthering Heights ripoff storyline. Her character more or less took the place of Victoria Winters, governess of David Collins, when Victoria departed with a lover who was reincarnated from her time travel sequence.

Talk about mistakes. I remember the episode where there was "supposed" to be a floating knife going towards one of the actors and you could see the outline of the arm delivering the knife. Talk bout funny.

Good stuff. Can't wait to see how Depp portrays Barnabas.

Yes, I remember that well. The school bus doors would open and everyone would RUN as fast as they could to get home so they would not miss the beginning of Dark Shadows! That was discussed by cast members on the DVD, it was a national phenomenon.

I remember this show very fondly. It would come n the air in this area @ 3pm (CDT), so it was hard to see a whole episode by the time I got home from school just a few blocks away. It was so cool to see Barnabas Collins become a vampire on screen for the first time.
I had the fortunate instance to see Jonathon Frid in a revival of "Arsenic and Old Lace" w. Jean Stapleton and Marion Ross as the two murdering aunts. And, even with those two great women as the leads, he still could scare the the hell out of people as the murderous escaped convict nephew. He stole the show.

This brought back some great memories. I also ran home to watch the show. I never missed an episode! I wish I had saved all of my Dark Shadows stuff. But, unfortunately I had Barnabas and Quentin posters in my room and I I swear their eyes were following me, so I had got rid of them to insure my sanity. Stupid! But it was a scary show. Traveling to the studios and seeing the stars in person left you with great memories and momentos. Lucky you.

I went to Little Flower, so I would get off the 59 bus at Devereaux and run the half block home at 1313 McKinley to see Dark Shadows. Quentin was so hot, but never take the place of Barnabas. The Daily News or Enquirer had a full page pull-out poster of Barnabas and I had that hanging on my wall forever.
