Dark Shadows: Come See How The Vampires Do It…

Dark Shadows 1

On the red carpet for his new film Public Enemies, Johnny Depp confirmed that the long planned big screen adaptation of the Gothic ‘60s soap opera Dark Shadows is going to happen with director Tim Burton at the helm. Depp will play Barnabas Collins, the tortured vampire of Collinwood. Anyone of a certain age (old!) remembers running home after school to catch the ghoul-filled 4 o’clock ABC show,  Originally conceived as a suspense drama starring ‘30’ s and 40’s beauty siren Joan Bennett, the sudser was floundering in the ratings until executive producer Dan Curtis decided to go for broke and add a supernatural element. Jonathan Frid was cast as Barnabas Collins, a reluctant bloodsucker, and suddenly Curtis had the hottest show in daytime. The show spawned a fanatical following (myself included) and became a merchandiser’s dream. There were Dark Shadows cards, games, dolls, LP’s, books, a comic strip, fangs and endless magazine coverage especially ones geared to the teen market like 16, Tiger Beat and Flip. Later the show added David Selby as Quentin Collins, a werewolf, and it found itself with another teen heartthrob. (Frid, a middle-aged Shakespearean actor who had once shared a stage with Katharine Hepburn, was the most unlikely of sex symbols, but housewives couldn’t get enough of him).

Also quite popular on the show and my personal favorite was Lara Parker as Angelique, the witch who was spurned by Barnabas and who cast the spell on him that made him a vampire. Parker went on to star in a few films (Save The Tiger, Race With The Devil) did a lot of episodic TV, and now writes Dark Shadows books.

I met Lara Parker at the tender age of 14, and she could not have been nicer. I was one of the many young teens who hung outside the Dark Shadows Studios on West 53rd St. in NYC. I would take a bus from center city Philadelphia to New York (I think it was $7 round trip) and patiently wait for the actors to come out after a long day of filming. Dark Shadows was taped live, and there was no stopping for re-takes. If a mistake was made (and boy were there) they just kept going. Scenery falling, camera men on camera themselves, and  Joan Bennett forever fumbling her lines. It all stayed in.

Anyway, one time I was waiting outside for a glimpse of some star wattage and Lara Parker emerged. She was immediately surrounded by the young crowd. I was too shy to approach her, but I didn’t have to worry. A loud mouthed girl named Laura from Jersey City I had met there, yelled “You have to look at this guy’s scrapbook of you”. Parker came over to me, saw my scrapbook and took my hand and brought me inside the studio lobby. Once there, she proceeded to peruse every page, while exclaiming “I can’t believe anyone would do this for me”. She then inscribed it (see below).

I also got to meet Frid, Bennett, Kathryn Leigh Scott, Marie Wallace, Humbert Allen Astredo, Denise Nickerson, Nancy Barrett, and Grayson Hall. They all were very gracious. Hall was a hoot. The Academy Award nominee (The Night Of The Iguana) was quite the grand dame. She seemed larger than life, gesturing regally with her cigarette. And what amazed me was when the autograph signing and conversations were done they all simply walked up 53rd St. and disappeared into the crowd. Just like normal people.

Sadly the two films of the TV series, House of Dark Shadows and Night of Dark Shadows aren’t on DVD yet. House of Dark Shadows had a great tagline “Come see how the vampires do it”. And remember, this was way before Twilight or HBO’s True Blood pumped up the sexual aspects of vampirism.

The show ran from 1966–1971 and has been in syndication on and off for years and has found whole new generations of fans. All the episodes are available on DVD from MPI Home Video.

    Wonderful article! And I was never a fan of the show. Now, I will start checking them out.

    I enjoyed reading this article. Dark Shadows had been a mesmerizing tv show for me and I am not Old! I like the ambiguity with which its characters interacted and the always-partially covert plot line; it added to its eroticism :-)

  3. I went to Little Flower, so I would get off the 59 bus at Devereaux and run the half block home at 1313 McKinley to see Dark Shadows. Quentin was so hot, but never take the place of Barnabas. The Daily News or Enquirer had a full page pull-out poster of Barnabas and I had that hanging on my wall forever.

    Wasn't Kate Jackson in HOUSE of DARK SHADOWS?

    This brought back some great memories. I also ran home to watch the show. I never missed an episode! I wish I had saved all of my Dark Shadows stuff. But, unfortunately I had Barnabas and Quentin posters in my room and I I swear their eyes were following me, so I had got rid of them to insure my sanity. Stupid! But it was a scary show. Traveling to the studios and seeing the stars in person left you with great memories and momentos. Lucky you.

    I remember this show very fondly. It would come n the air in this area @ 3pm (CDT), so it was hard to see a whole episode by the time I got home from school just a few blocks away. It was so cool to see Barnabas Collins become a vampire on screen for the first time.
    I had the fortunate instance to see Jonathon Frid in a revival of "Arsenic and Old Lace" w. Jean Stapleton and Marion Ross as the two murdering aunts. And, even with those two great women as the leads, he still could scare the the hell out of people as the murderous escaped convict nephew. He stole the show.

  7. Jack says:

    Yes, I remember that well. The school bus doors would open and everyone would RUN as fast as they could to get home so they would not miss the beginning of Dark Shadows! That was discussed by cast members on the DVD, it was a national phenomenon.

    Talk about mistakes. I remember the episode where there was "supposed" to be a floating knife going towards one of the actors and you could see the outline of the arm delivering the knife. Talk bout funny.

    Good stuff. Can't wait to see how Depp portrays Barnabas.

  9. Charles R.L. Power says:

    Kate Jackson played Daphne in a sort of Wuthering Heights ripoff storyline. Her character more or less took the place of Victoria Winters, governess of David Collins, when Victoria departed with a lover who was reincarnated from her time travel sequence.

    I was a big Dark Shadow fan. I would race home from school to watch it. When it came time for my Confirmation, I had to select a name. I found out Barnabas is a name from the bible. So I wanted barnabas as my confirmation name. My mom said know, saying I just wanted it because of the vampire character on TV. I settled for Timothy, my cousin name.
    Great memories from that show.
    Thanks,
    Ray

    @RAY BRAVO...

    Hysterical, the story of the Confirmation name! I'm laughing think of a good Catholic boy wanting to take the name of a vampire... Brilliant.

    @JACK....

    You ain't a-kiddin' about the school bus doors - they could not open them fast enough!! My God, we would RUN down the street to catch the beginning of this show - books, coats, EVERYTHING just TOSSED any-damned-where to make sure that we wouldn't miss it.

    ...And Angelique..FASCINATING....I remember the storyline with her twin Alexis...Angelique had died, and was having a very novel funeral with her casket open in the graveyard. Alexis came to pay her respects and touched Angelique's corpse. Angelique opened her eyes and and took the "warmth" of her twin's life for her own -- well, it turned out that Alexis ended up in the box. Scared me for days. Lara Parker has intriqued me FOREVER.

    Going through the show episode by episode can be "plodding", and, of course, you look at it through different eyes...but, what a show!

    Jonathan Frid...HAD to be him for Halloween one year that I remember...and remember getting a DARK SHADOWS board game for a birthday when I wss in the 3rd Grade...complete with a set of fangs. I wore them out!!

    Great article -- thanks for reminding me of Lara Parker, Jonathan Frid and DARK SHADOWS!

    What a great story! To think there was a time when people could wait outside a studio (in NYC) and meet their favorite TV stars. Still love Dark Shadows, hope the remake captures the spirit (or spirits!)of the original.
