As one who sometimes disappointed in the comments of some of the contributors to this forum, it is truely refreshing for me to see how many others have recognized and appreciated the contributions of perhaps the greatest supporting - character actor of Hollywood of the '30's'40s and '50s.

He also was a big contributor in Hunchback of Notre Dame - also 1939!!!! He was in 5 of the top 10 movies in that gr8-est of all yrs. The only part he didn 't play was a munchkin! He shud have been given an honorary award for sheer volume with his genius.
And thanks for the memory of him on TV with Kathleen Freeman - totally forgot about it.
And - thanks - for caring about where his remains have remained all these yrs. I hope this sparks a family member (or other) to take care of this oversite.

Cameron Mitchell was not the son of Thomas Mitchell. Cameron's father was a minister.

Thomas Mitchell, Hollywood's most versatile character actor who gave movies their texture, enriched them with faultless, idiosyncratic acting; lifted many of them out of the ordinary into memorable experiences; whose indispensible, presence made the "stars," the key players, look great. Imagine the long-forgotten "The Sullivan's without him. You can't. The "Mitch" was the best.

Thomas Mitchell was a great character actor. His wofk in 1939 alone is superior to any other character actor that I can think of. Apart from the 1939 all-time classics, I cherish his role as the seedy crook in SECRET OF THE INCAS. Mitchell's death scene has some wonderful lines. "Gravity gets us all in the end, Harry" he says to Charlton Heston, and then after a struggle Mitchell hurtles off the top of Machu Picchu.

Love me some "Uncle Billy!" He's on a list of delightful character actors that I always look for in any oldie--and I love my oldies. He gave a good performance in everything he was in.

I though his role in " Only Angels Have Wings" with Cary Grant was one his best pictures, also "Mr. Smith goe's to Washington" with Claude Rains, James Stewart and Jean Arthur. She was also in the " Wings" movie and a very good actress.
