  1. Bob Richards says:

I believe the best Viet-Nam war film (it is not on this list), was "We Were Soldiers" starring Mel Gibson.

  2. dan penrose says:

i believe go tell the spartens best explains the futility of fighting other peoples wars for them, arm them, train them, but it is they that must do the fighting and the dying for the cause they profess to believe in,go tell the spartens explains this to a tee and is the most believable portrayal of politics of this conflict i have seen.

We were soldiers and Platoon in my book are tied.
Two ways of looking at the war.
Honor,Valor and then a burnout Sergeant who gets crazy.
In the next couple of days back in 65 it all starts.
    Will never forget our dead.
We were soldiers 2 is coming hopefully in the next few years.Similar name.

Next question: what was the WORST movie about the Vietnam War? Answer: "The Deer Hunter," because of its rampant chauvinism (remember the ending, with everybody bursting into "God Bless America" after all the horrors shown on screen?)

  5. Ken Strawn says:

I agree with the comments that We Were Soldiers, which is not on the list was the best Viet Nam war movie. I also love the boot camp sequence of Full Metal Jacket because it is the most accurate picture of that experience that I have ever seen (except for getting bullets back from the firing range--an impossibility). Apocalypse Now shows the insanity that happens in any war, much like the novel Catch-22 did. The movie of Catch 22 was trying to cash in the success of MASH. I enjoyed Platoon but don't rate it quite as high as the others.

  6. Jo Manette Nousak says:

I think the best Vietnam movie is Tigerland starring Colin Farrell, Cole Hauser and Clifton Collins Jr. I also agree with other commenters that We Were Soldiers should have made the list and is right up there with Platoon.

  7. stan collins says:

A very good movie from a different view, Garden of Stone. When we were home from the war, we were glad. But held a feeling of remorse, not being with our brothers. Not being able to Make a different! We were lost in the war, and truly lost when we came home. Welcome Home Brothers, Welcome Home!

  8. Bill Millar says:

The bestis Platoon, then We Were Soliers. As far as the worst is by far Tigerland!

  9. M. Logan says:

TCM-you left off "Coming Home;" a powerful realistic view about the aftermath of Viet Nam, a powerful statement.
Although you specified Viet Nam, and "The Killing Fields" should get a nod, a great film.

  10. Barry McDaniel says:

Hamburger Hill should have been on the list. It may not have the big ticket actors and hype, but it is a brutally honest portrayal of combat.

  11. Michael McQueen says:

We Were Soldiers is easily the best movie about Vietnam. Hamburger Hill should also have been included in your list.

  12. ron says:

I agree, how could you leave We Were Soldiers off the list and Hamburger Hill; they are the top 2 without a doubt.

  13. Tony Magz says:

"WE WERE SOLDIERS..." Great cast, outstanding special effects, true story that showed the war from both sides. General Hal Moore and Reporter Joe Gallagher along with the soldiers of the 7th Cav. were real heroes.

  14. Barbara says:

I agree, "Coming Home" should definitely have been on your list!

  15. Gene says:

As a Vietnam vet, I see Platoon as the one most reflecting my experience, followed closely by Apocalypse Now for showing the unreality of being there. The Deer Hunter is a great film about the futility of that war, and The Green Berets is the most old-fashioned rah-rah propaganda.

  16. Manuel Hernandez says:

For me it was We Were Soldiers as the best and I cannot beieve that you would leave out Hamburger Hill off the list, it has to be one the best.
