Movies Unlimited New DVD Releases: Week of 9-27-10

Autumn is upon us, which means that the holidays are right around the corner...like it or not. It also means that summer blockbusters are going to be making their way to DVD and Blu-ray. This is certainly true for this week's new releases, which include such popcorn favorites as Iron Man 2 and Get Him to the Greek. Also coming out are a classic mystery series, one of the most groundbreaking miniseries ever to air, a documentary on babies, other TV offerings and much, much more. Let's check out what titles are now available.

Iron Man 2

Tony Stark's (Robert Downey Jr.) refusal to turn over his Iron Man tech to the U.S. government puts him at odds with old friend Lt. Col. James Rhodes (Don Cheadle). But when rival weapons manufacturer Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) teams up with Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke), a Russian criminal with a vendetta against Stark, Iron Man and Rhodes (who armors up as War Machine) must work together to take them down. Hit sequel co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury; directed by Jon Favreau.

Get Him to the Greek

Outrageously funny spinoff of "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" finds rock star Aldous Snow (Russell Brand) at an all-time career low, his sobriety a distant memory. But he gets one last shot at a comeback thanks to low-level record exec Aaron Green (Jonah Hill, not reprising his previous role) whose effort to get the rocker from London to L.A.'s Greek Theatre for a momentous concert leads to a hilarious drug- and alcohol-fueled odyssey. With Rose Byrne, Sean Combs. A fun film, even without any Dracula puppets.

Ellery Queen Mysteries

Based on the popular "Ellery Queen" mystery novels, this fondly remembered 1975 NBC series set in the late 1940s starred Jim Hutton as the titular detective. Notable for featuring a fourth wall-breaking segment in which Queen directly challenged the audience to solve each episode's mystery, the program co-starred David Wayne as Inspector Richard Queen (Ellery's father) and Tom Reese as the helpful Sgt. Thomas Velie. All 22 episodes of the series--including "The Adventure of the Comic Book Crusader," "The Adventure of the Mad Tea Party," "The Adventure of the Pharaoh's Curse," and "The Adventure of the Disappearing Dagger"--plus the feature-length pilot "Too Many Suspects" are featured in a six-disc set.

Rich Man, Poor Man: The Complete Collection

Based on Irwin Shaw's best-selling novel, the groundbreaking ABC miniseries "Rich Man, Poor Man" starred Nick Nolte and Peter Strauss as German-American New England brothers--rebellious boxer Tom Jordache and driven businessman Rudy Jordache--whose divergent lives are followed from the end of World War II to the 1960s. Susan Blakely plays the woman both siblings are drawn to; with Ed Asner, Fionnula Flanagan, Gloria Grahame, Ray Milland, and William Smith as Falconetti. The story continues in "Rich Man, Poor Man: Book II," as U.S. senator Strauss tries to mentor his brother's son as well as his own stepchild, while at the same time dealing with a mysterious mogul out to destroy him. Peter Haskell, Gregg Henry, James Carroll Jordan, Susan Sullivan also star.

Party Down: Season 2

They dream of being big Hollywood stars...but for now, they'll have to settle for being Tinseltown caterers! This hip comedy series from Starz follows these would-be screen idols as they toil around the edges of a world filled with the rich and famous. Adam Scott, Ken Marino, Lizzy Caplan, Martin Starr and Jane Lynch star. All 10 episodes from the second season--including "Jackal Onassis Backstage Party," "Steve Guttenberg's Birthday," "Party Down Company Picnic," "Cole Landry's Draft Day Party," and "Constance Carmell Wedding"--are featured.

CSI: Crime Scene Investigation: The Tenth Season

They're not psychics, but the dead speak to them. William Petersen, Marg Helgenberger, George Eads, Jorja Fox, Gary Dourdan and Paul Guilfoyle are the forensics experts of the Las Vegas Police Department's CSI unit, using high-tech science and old-fashioned detective work to solve the city's most baffling and violent crimes. All 23 episodes from season nine--including "Family Affair," "Better Off Dead," "Unshockable," "Doctor Who," and "Meat Jekyll"--are featured in a seven-disc set.

Scrubs: The Complete and Final Ninth Season

Airing on NBC and ABC during its 2001-10 run, this sitcom followed the travails of recent med school grad J.D (Zach Braff) as he and fellow interns Elliot (Sarah Chalke) and Turk (Donald Faison) go to work at a hectic, off-the-wall hospital. Helping (and sometimes hindering) the trio along the way are the gruff but experienced Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley), chief of medicine Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins), sassy nurse Carla (Judy Reyes), and the facility's acerbic janitor (Neil Flynn). All 13 episodes from season nine--including "Our First Day of School," "Our Mysteries," "Our Dear Leaders," "Our Driving Issues," and "Our Thanks"--have been collected in a two-disc set.

The Killer Inside Me

Based on the 1952 Jim Thompson novel, director Michael Winterbottom's ("A Mighty Heart") disturbing crime drama follows the self-told story of outwardly polite Texas deputy sheriff Lou Ford (Casey Affleck), who takes to brutality like a bee to honey shortly after he's sent to meet with a local prostitute (Jessica Alba). While maintaining a mask of innocence, Ford's crimes grow, unrestrained by matters of conscience. With Ned Beatty, Kate Hudson.

Babies

If you like Anne Geddes photos, man have we got a documentary for you. It's babies! And they're doing stuff! Aww.

The Cleveland Show: The Complete Season One

Last (and certainly least) we have the latest pop culture-reference packed cartoon from Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane.

How can there be a CD available from The Swimmer, but no DVD? Also, The Reckoning (1973) must be tragically under-rated if as yet it still is not out on DVD.

While we are listing noDVD frustrations, lets not forget Jean Renoir's SWAMP WATER.

    & Arthur Penn's MICKEY ONE.

When will there be a complete, uncut director's copy of James A. Michener's Hawaii (1966) with Max Von Sydow, Julie Andrews, the late Richard Harris, Manu Tupou, etc., instead of that cut up travesty that was on DVD a few years ago?
