New DVD Releases: Week of 8-16-10

There are a few films making their way to DVD and Blu-ray this week, but the biggest and best releases are all TV shows. Here's what's in store for you to watch now. Happy viewing!

Rocky & Bullwinkle & Friends: Complete Season 4

We pull the fourth season of Jay Ward's classic toon out of our hat with this two-disc set that includes the complete adventures "Painting Theft," "The Guns of Abalone," "The Treasure of Monte Zoom," "Goof Gas Attack," and "Banana Formula"--along with episodes of "Aesop and Son," "Dudley Do-Right," "Fractured Fairy Tales," and "Peabody's Improbable History."

Dexter: The Fourth Season

Looking for more of Showtime's serial killer drama? Then this four-disc set featuring all 12 episodes from the fourth season--including "Living the Dream," "Dirty Harry," "Slack Tide," "Hungry Man," and "The Getaway"--will certainly slay you!

Furry Vengeance

This is a family film starring Brendan Fraser, Brooke Shields, Ken Jeong and a bunch of lousy looking CGI-enhanced animals.  There's probably a message about suburban sprawl and environmentalism hidden somewhere deep within the filck, but there's no way I'm sitting through the endless Fraser pratfalls to find it.

Ugly Betty: The Complete Fourth and Final Season

Betty, we hardly knew ye. Once a breakout show on ABC, fans left the show in droves as each season progressed--resulting in its cancellation last year. Oh well. If you enjoyed Betty and her middle-of-the-road adventures that were cloaked by a false shroud of subversity, relive the madcap fun in this four-disc set. Features all 20 episodes of the final season--including the two-part "The Butterfly Effect," "Plus None," "The Passion of the Betty," "London Calling," and the series finale, "Hello Goodbye."

Temple Grandin

Claire Danes delivers a bravura performance in the role of Temple Grandin, the young, high-functioning autistic woman who faces misunderstanding and prejudice throughout her youth. Even as she obtains a master's degree in animal science from Arizona State University in 1975, Grandin encounters resistance to her pioneering ideas about treating animals led to slaughter in a more humane fashion. David Strathairn, Julia Ormond, and Catherina O'Hara co-star.

Cougar Town: The Complete First Season

Courteney Cox stars in this smart and sexy sitcom as Jules Cobb, a recently divorced mother and successful real estate agent who reinvents herself with a new life as a "cougar" (a woman over 40 on the prowl for younger men). The series also stars Busy Philipps as Jules' feisty, fun-loving assistant Laurie, Christa Miller as her sharp-tongued neighbor and best friend Ellie, and Brian Van Holt as her unemployed ex-husband Bobby. With Dan Byrd, Ian Gomez. All 20 episodes from the first season--including the "Pilot," "You Wreck Me," "Don't Come Around Here No More," "Scare Easy," and "Wake Up Time"--are featured in a three-disc set.

Friday Night Lights: The Fourth Season

You've got sports in my drama! You've got drama in my sports!

Batman: The Brave and the Bold: Season One, Part One

Are you a fan of DC Comics' Silver Age? If so, then you'll love this fun Cartoon Network series that has more in common with the 1960s Batman TV show than the downbeat (yet still excellent) Christopher Nolan Batfilms. Each episode finds Batman teaming up with a different guest hero--including Aquaman, the Blue Beetle, Green Arrow, the Huntress, Plastic Man, and others--to take down the world's wickedest villains. Diedrich Bader supplies the darknight detective's voice.

The Temple Grandin performance by Claire Danes is one of the most outstanding performances I have
ever seen. She should certainly get an Emmy and so much moe credit for getting the message of this
    tremencous woman to the public!

As the wife of an "Aspie" and also the grandmother of another, this film is particularly significant to me, as it is my husband, who is a PhD. in chemical engineering. We had the great pleasure to meet with Ms. Grandin when she visited our city. Ms. Danes was excellent in her understanding of Asperger's as well as her grasp of Mr. Grandin's personality.
