New DVD Releases: Week of 7-4-10

BrooklynsFinestWith the dog days of summer rapidly approaching, it seems like a perfect time to stay in out of the heat with a DVD or Blu-ray. Fortunately, there are plenty of great new releases available to help keep you cool. Let's take a look at what titles are making their home viewing debut this week.

Brooklyn's Finest

Due to retire in a week, Brooklyn cop Eddie (Richard Gere) feels overwhelmed by depression. Meanwhile, undercover officer Tango (Don Cheadle) struggles to stay on the right side of the law while infiltrating a drug gang, and Sal (Ethan Hawke) tries to find enough cash to buy his family a new home he can't afford on a policeman's salary. Their destinies clash in this fierce crime drama directed by Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day"); with Wesley Snipes, Lili Taylor.

Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics II

Looking for some vintage favorites? Then check out this box set that compiles a number of film noir epics. First up, director Fritz Lang's "Human Desire" (1954), based on the Zola novel and Renoir film "La Bete Humaine," stars Glenn Ford as a railroad engineer who has an affair with Gloria Grahame, the wife of co-worker Broderick Crawford, after finding out the couple are responsible for a murder. Detective Fred MacMurray gets mixed up with a suspected bank robber's girlfriend (Kim Novak), leading to deception and double-crosses, in "Pushover" (1954). With Phil Carey, Dorothy Malone, E.G. Marshall. "The Brothers Rico" (1957) finds a former Mafia accountant pulled back into the dangerous world of organized crime when he learns the Mob wants to eliminate his siblings. Richard Conte, James Darren, Paul Picerni star. Falsely accused of robbery and murder, fugitive Aldo Ray seeks help from mysterious beauty Anne Bancroft in "Nightfall" (1957), co-starring Brian Keith. And Los Angeles becomes a "City of Fear" (1959) as authorities try to locate an escaped convict in possession of a deadly radioactive explosive. With Vince Edwards, Patricia Blair, John Archer.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

Brutal and gripping Swedish suspenser, based on the first book in Stieg Larsson's popular "Millennium Trilogy," follows a middle-aged journalist (Michael Nyqvist) hired by a wealthy industrialist to look into his niece's mysterious disappearance decades earlier. Nyqvist joins with a tattooed, twentysomething computer hacker (Noomi Rapace) on a quest that draws the unlikely team into a sordid world of decadent and deadly family secrets. FYI: An American remake helmed by Seven director David Fincher is currently in preproduction for release in 2012.

A Single Man

In 1962 Los Angeles, a gay professor from England (Colin Firth), distraught over the death of his longtime partner (Matthew Goode) months earlier and the family's refusal to allow him to attend the funeral, prepares his planned suicide. Firth decides to spend his last day on Earth reflecting on his relationship and connecting with an eclectic group of people. Director Tom Ford's poignant adaptation of Christopher Isherwood's novel also stars Julianne Moore, Nicolas Hoult, Jon Kortajarena. This is way off topic, but worth mentioning that Goode was terribly miscast in Watchmen. Just sayin'.
