There's a lot of great new releases--including a cult British series, MTV's controversial look at life at the Jersey shore, a rock biopic, and much more--making their DVD and Blu-ray debuts this week, so let's jump right in and see what titles are worth your time and money.
This wildly entertaining supernatural dramedy from the BBC chronicles the adventures of werewolf George (Russell Tovey), ghost Annie (Lenora Crichlow) and vampire Mitchell (Aidan Turner). Sharing a house together, the trio attempt to make sense of their complicated lives and otherworldly abilities while avoiding those wishing to do them harm. With Jason Watkins, Sinead Keenan. All six episodes from the first season are featured in a two-disc set. Recommended for fans of True Blood, Doctor Who and good TV in general.
Jersey Shore: Season One: Uncensored
One of the most popular and controversial programs to ever appear on MTV, this reality program follows the lives of eight young adults who move into a shore house in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, for the summer. Endless drama then ensues as the fist-pumping strangers live and work together. Discover what GTL (gym, tan, laundry), creeping, and grenades are all about with Snooki, Mike "The Situation," JWoww, Ron Ron, Sammi "Sweetheart," Pauly D, Vinny, and Angelina in the uncensored versions of the show. All nine episodes from the first season--including "A New Family," "Good Riddance," "Boardwalk Blowups," "One Shot," and "That's How the Shore Goes"--plus the reunion special are featured in a three-disc set.
The story of the 1970s all-girl rock band The Runaways is told in this energetic biopic based on vocalist Cherie Currie's memoirs. After guitarist and founding member Joan Jett (Kristen Stewart) convinces flamboyant music impresario Kim Fowley (Michael Shannon) to manage her band, she's soon teamed up with troubled teen singer Currie (Dakota Fanning), with whom she shares a powerful chemistry--both on stage and off. With Stella Maeve, Scout Taylor-Compton, and Tatum O'Neal. This would make a great double feature with Joan Jett's 1987 rock epic Light of Day...if only that film were available on DVD!
The members of an elite Special Forces team are double-crossed and left for dead after a botched mission in the Bolivian jungle. Now officially off the books, they must team up with a mysterious and sexy female operative in an effort to get even with the man who betrayed them and foil his plot to set off a weapon of mass destruction that will have no adverse effect on the environment. Based on the comic book series, this explosive actioner stars Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Zoe Saldana, Chris Evans, and Jason Patric.
Consciously aping the style of 1980s buddy movies, director Kevin Smith ("Clerks") delivers a raucous cop comedy in which partners Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan find themselves on the outs with their boss and on the hunt for a baseball card so valuable Willis plans to sell it to pay for his daughter's wedding. The crazy caper soon brings the pair into contact with dangerous, drug-dealing thugs. Rashida Jones, Kevin Pollak co-star.
Culled from episodes of the popular online series, this slick actioner follows Neal Bannen, a con man, thief, and unapologetic womanizer with a police chief for a father and an uncle who's a reputed mob boss. Bannen has every intention of quitting the criminal life and going straight, but first he'll have to pull the infamous "one last job" in order to pay off the $150,000 he owes to a dangerous gangster. Mark Gantt, Vanessa Marcil, Robert Forster, Michael Lerner, and Michael Ironside star.
The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers
Was Daniel Ellsberg, the military strategist and high-ranking Defense Department official who leaked thousands of top-secret documents regarding the Vietnam War to the New York Times in 1971, a hero or a traitor? Learn the facts behind the "Pentagon Papers" case, which reached the Supreme Court and affected the course of the conflict and the Nixon Administration, in this revealing documentary narrated by Ellsberg himself.
Director Bong Joon-ho's macabre mystery features Kim Hye-ja as the title character who has spent her life caring for her simple-minded son (Won Bin). However, their relationship is put to a harrowing test when a young girl is found murdered and Won is hastily convicted for the crime. Hye-ja must then launch her own investigation to clear her son's name, but the quest soon uncovers shocking secrets. Recommended for fans of taut suspensers.
Born and bred in Georgia, possessing a country-boy exterior, and spouting folksy nuggets of wisdom, attorney Ben Matlock (Andy Griffith) was actually a razor-sharp defense lawyer who would not only prove his clients innocent of murder but would often find the real killer. The 1986-95 CBS series's changing cast included Kene Holliday, Linda Purl, Nancy Stafford, Julie Sommars. All 22 fifth-season episodes--including "The Mother," "The Narc," "The Man of the Year," the two-part "The Trial," and "The Celebrity"--are featured in a six-disc set.
My Boys: The Complete Second & Third Seasons
PJ (Jordana Spiro) goes out of her way to make sure she's treated like one of the guys while pounding the beat as a Chicago-based sports writer. But can this gorgeous gal remain part of the bullpen when the handsome Bobby (Kyle Howard) steps up to bat for a rival newspaper and hits a romantic home run with the saucy, sexy scribe? Reid Scott, Michael Bunin co-star in this sharp-witted comedy series. All nine episodes from season two and all nine episodes from season three--including "The Transitioning," "Spit Take," "John, Cougar, Newman Camp," "Private Eyes," and "Spring Training"--are presented in a two-disc set.
