It's a great week to be a fan of recent box office fare and classic TV series. Amongst the many new offerings hitting DVD and Blu-ray are the latest flicks by Denzel Washington, Michael Cera, Kristen Bell and Samuel L. Jackson, as well as DVD collections of shows ranging from Here's Lucy to Family Guy. Here's a look at a variety of titles debuting this week.
Post-apocalyptic actioner stars Denzel Washington as Eli, a loner travelling across what's left of America in order to protect a sacred book that could provide mankind's salvation...or its destruction. Armed with weapons and his unwavering faith, he comes into conflict with Carnegie (Gary Oldman)--a scheming warlord who is determined to use the tome for his own purposes. Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, Jennifer Beals co-star; directed by the Hughes Brothers.
In a perfect world, this would be a biopic about the 1980s one-hit wonder group who brought us all "The Promise." Instead, we're stuck with a formulaic romantic comedy starring Kristen Bell as a loveless New Yorker who removes coins from a magical "fountain of love" during a trip to Rome. Before you can say "contrivance," she returns home and finds herself pursued by the men who threw them in: a male model (Dax Shepard), a street magician (Jon Heder), and a sausage mogul (Danny DeVito). But when she meets a handsome reporter (Josh Duhamel), she's unsure if he's one of the coins' former owners or if he really loves her. Will Arnett, Anjelica Huston also star.
Based on a novel by C.D. Payne, this quirky dark comedy focuses on Nick Twisp (Michael Cera), a virginal misfit dealing with divorced parents and their respective new lovers. When Nick meets the beautiful and smart Sheeni Saunders (Portia Doubleday)--a girl he believes will never be interested in him--he creates a suave, mustachioed alter ego named Francois Dillinger in an attempt to woo her. With Jean Smart, Mary Kay Place, Zach Galifianakis, Ray Liotta, and Steve Buscemi.
Tense sociopolitical thriller stars Carrie-Anne Moss as an FBI agent who stumbles upon a Muslim terrorist holding information regarding three nuclear weapons set to detonate in the U.S. Unable to coerce the bad guy into divulging their location, Moss must recruit a special black-ops agent (Samuel L. Jackson) to get the job done before tragedy strikes. Michael Sheen and Stephen Root co-star. Given the amount of movies he's in each year one has to wonder when exactly Samuel L. Jackson sleeps.
