New DVD Releases: Week of 3-15-10

The Twilight Saga New Moon DVDThis week's notable new releases include the latest Twilight vampire tale, Disney's most recent animated effort, an alien abduction thriller purportedly based on some real-life close encounters, the eighth season of a TV classic and a fish-out-of-water comedy featuring Hugh Grant, Sarah Jessica Parker and, best of all, Wilford Brimley!

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Whether you are on Team Edward, Team Jacob or Team Enough Already, you have to admit that the sparkly vampires of Twilight are a full-fledged pop culture phenomenon. I'll leave it to you to debate whether or not this is a good thing. For now, let me just say that this blockbuster second film based on Stephanie Meyer's tween book series features a hesitant bloodsucker, a werewolf, an indie rock soundtrack and substantial amounts of pouting. Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and the complicated/brooding Robert Pattinson star; directed by Chris Weitz.

Of course those of you who have had it with all this emo nonsense, can always just check out Near Dark again (directed by The Hurt Locker's Kathryn Bigelow!) for some old-school vampire thrills.

The Princess and the Frog

Disney returns to traditional animation with this loose adaptation of E.D. Baker's novel "The Frog Princess." In early 1900s New Orleans, Prince Naveen--transformed into a frog by a voodoo curse--mistakes the beautiful Tiana for a princess whose kiss will break the spell. But when the smooch also turns Tiana into a frog, the pair must race to find a way to change them both back, falling madly in love along the way. Features the voices of Anika Noni Rose, Bruno Campos, Jim Cummings and Oprah Winfrey. Includes the Oscar-nominated songs "Almost There" and "Down in New Orleans."

The Fourth Kind

Are aliens abducting residents of Nome, Alaska? Find out in this terrifying "true story" that is equal parts Fire in the Sky and Paranormal Activity. Milla Jovovich introduces the film and plays the role of psychologist Abigail Tyler, who asserts that videotaped sessions detailing her patients' bizarre experiences offer clear evidence of alien abductions. Mixing footage of the "real" Tyler's cases with dramatizations, the result is an unforgettable thrill ride. With Elias Koteas, Will Patton.

Did You Hear About the Morgans?

And more importantly, do you care? Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker star in this tepid comedy about a Manhattan couple, on the verge of divorce, who wind up in witness protection after they happen upon a murder. Shipped off to a small town in Wyoming, the feuding city folks will have to adapt to their new rural surroundings while rediscovering why they fell in love in the first place. Sam Elliott, Mary Steenburgen, and Wilford Brimley also star. You've seen this type of movie before, usually done much better.

Hawaii Five-O: The Eighth Season

If you are excited about the plans for a Hawaii Five-O remake starring Lost's Daniel Dae Kim that's debuting next TV season, you can revisit the original series on DVD. This six-disc set includes 23 classic episodes culled from the eighth season.

    Dolores,
Unfortunately, there's no word yet on when those classics will be available. There are a number of reasons why films don't hit DVD, most likely to do with legal and/or music rights. With any luck, these sought after gems will be available for home viewing -- and when they are we will carry them here at Movies Unlimited! Keep reading our weekly new DVD feature to keep up to date on our latest and greatest new releases.
